-Do you want to read the dinosaurs book or the construction trucks book?
-Dinosaur book! *gets up on their own*

I remember my mom trying to do this when I was little, and it was the first time in my life I felt the clear sensation of someone being condescending towards me, even if I could not have remotely described that at the time.

That helps a lot, but no plan always work. My morning is a perfect example.

"Put on your coat"
"I don't wear a coat."
"Do you want the black one or blue one?"
"Why do I have to wear a coat?"
"Because there's snow on the ground" (yea we had a white Halloween here)
"But I don't want to wear a coat."
"What's your plan? You can't go through the winter without a coat."
"I'll wear a coat in the winter. Just not today."
"There's snow on the ground, winter has arrived."
"Look I just don't want to wear a coat today."

They're not always reasonable and sending them to school without a coat is going to get CPS called on me, so it's wearing a coat while crying about how I'm unfair.

I feel bad your kids have you for a father.

I have heard of this tactic working quite well in most social situations, but especially with children. Don't outright deny someone something you don't want them to do, give them options for what you want to do instead.
