I was looking back at some pictures someone took of my highschool's 2012 halloween night, taking place *in* the highschool. Bam, two popular girls full on blackface dressed as Serena and Venus William. I'm like 90% sure I was there but have zero recollection of this.

We did a high school version of a yearly festival where some participants use black face paint. This festival, where non-natives use face and body paint, predates Western blackface.

No, they did have a "slave auction" fundraiser that I didn't think anything of at the time but is really sus in hindsight. Not in America but still. Was officially supported by the school and everything, even a couple of teachers could be "bought" as slaves for a day. Basically weren't allowed to make them do anything sexual or break school rules, but could make them help you with homework or use their senior passes to cut the lunchroom queue for you etc.

I got initiated for a high school team that way. My parents let them in my house at 4am so they could do it too. I had no idea it was going to happen, then I had a bunch of people in my room laughing and shoving me into a dress. Then we all went to breakfast at a local restaurant, then a full day of school. It was a pretty common initiation thing in the stone ages when I went to HS. Hopefully our society has grown and we are all being better now.

I dont know anyone at my HS who ever dressed up as another race at school, but I do have a close friend who is white and dressed as Mr. T for a holiday party in the early 90s. We all advised him not to do it, but to no avail. He is very embarrassed about it today, and I mock him about his choices every Halloween.

I also have a friend who got a flyer for a religious holiday celebration/worship service and thought it was a regular Halloween costume party. So he showed up to this worship service with about 500 people in a full Devil costume. I want to be clear: he wasnt trying to make a statement or anything. He just didnt understand the nature of what he was getting into. He got a bunch of stuff thrown at him and he got chased out, and the incident made the local paper.

I am not very smart, but some of my friends in HS were not exactly careful thinkers.
