I last played in WotLK so there'd be a ton of content if I come back...

but honestly the PvP sucks so why bother. I loved Winterhold and Stand, and was pretty much the only one

Seems like a bold move, but they've got Microsoft bankrolling them now, so I guess they can lean on that.

I liked the idea of winterhold more than the actual thing. They gave the alliance that stupid buff and having one dude run around stronger than a raid boss honestly wasn't fun. They couldn't win but they could be annoying.

no, they're both debatably dead and the story has moved on to friendship and therapy sessions with MLP dragons.

That same one dude who barely got to be warchief at all before dying the most unnecessary, bs death imaginable. But hey, Sylvannas is gone, so surely the writers can do something different now, righ--? And it's bad. It's just so very, irredeemably bad. Yet people continue going to bat for WoW for reasons the smartest among them cannot explain in any way that truly makes sense.

FFXIV might be suffering from its repetitive, formulaic loop at the moment, but it's still more than decent. It still has things for whenever someone is in the mood for it, like a basic sandwich that's been eaten three times a day every day for ten years. That is still leagues better than the state of WoW right now.

So glad metzen is back. Even if he has orcgasms regarding lore

What's hilarious is the thing that has drawn the most attention to this game in the past year or two is the hardcore version of Classic WoW.

I have seen more people talk about that then the last two recent expansions combined. What started off as an add-on has gotten so big that Blizzard is now implementing this in some of their own servers.

even people that somehow actually still like WoW fucking hated shadowlands. there's some good stuff in dragonflight but it falls really flat in a lot of places too.

there have been several times blizzard has implemented addons into the game. pretty sure most of the time there's been a big UI change it's because blizzard made a really popular addon a base feature. blizzard steals concepts all the time. it's not super weird compared to that other than that this particular addon made the game really popular with streamers.

Most dev studios do. Some (like Larian) at least give credit to the people they take their new features from.

yeah, i don't really knock on them for adapting the addons and such because that's just giving the customers what they want. i was mostly making fun of them because they literally just take ideas from other games and put crappier versions into their own stuff, or how a good portion of their writing is either hacky and unoriginal or just references to other media at this point.

jaina's story in bfa was kinda awesome and admittedly fucked me up a bit though no lie.

What I don't get it why people are complaing about the $90 early access fee... ... it's early access, you don't HAVE to get it.

The story is so shit anyway, I think only addicts play or rate WoW thesedays.

If you want a story you play FFXIV and if you want a different grind treadmill you play something else ~ Guild Wars if you want to pretend to be different, New World if you're trying to be unique and that other shit one I can't be arsed to remember otherwise.

Everyone else plays Runescape. =p

Heck, even the grind in a City of Heroes private server might be preferable to WoW. The story's better too. <_<

I'd agree with that argument for most games, but in an MMO I can understand the outrage. When the whole game is built around interacting with other players, participating in the initial launch of new content and getting to experience it for the first time alongside everyone else is a big event. Charging extra for that sounds really scummy.

Broadly, because it's manipulating FOMO, but there are some specific factors as well. For those that enjoy racing (which a lot of people do in MMOs), being a few days behind is an insurmountable handicap. For a story-centric game, waiting a few days to start can significantly increase the risk of being spoiled. For a community-based game, the community ends up split between early adopters and latecomers for the first little while. For a server-based game, starting early means players don't have their first experience soured by launch-day queues and crashes. For any game with quasi-competitive progression of any sort, being around to take advantage of day one bugs/oversights before they get patched out can give players a huge edge. Journalism-wise, the early access fee is basically mandatory for anyone that doesn't get a review copy, which effectively amounts to paywalling critical reviews to fluff early metacritic scores (since reviewers that are liable to properly criticize the game generally don't get sent review copies). Sure, you don't HAVE to get the game early, but there are plenty of reasons to be upset by having that be paywalled, both personally and as a general criticism of the industry.

Mostly, though, it's just naked, shameless money-grubbing, even more so than most scummy/predatory video game monetization. If they instead framed this as the game costing the premium price and launch and being discounted by $90 a week later, everybody would hate it, but that's exactly what they're doing. The game's done on the "early access" date. There's absolutely no reason everyone couldn't have it then, except that they want to charge for literally nothing on their end. Plenty of content creators will do similar things in the form of Patreon subscribers getting early access to content, but that's generally people who rely on those subscribers to make a living and want to incentivize subscriptions. When multi-billion dollar corporations do it because they're addicted to watching numbers go up meaninglessly, it's just plain greed.

Charging extra for the luxury of going first seems like good business to me, for a change.

I do wonder at what point the population of WoW dies off though. It's presumably all the same people who have been addicted since WotLK, the community hasn't really been growing. I guess it's probably not that expensive to support a 15 year old game, but at some point you think it would become unreasonable.

Like when they said Shadowlands was the end of the big saga of Warcraft 3 to try to act equivalent to FF14 Endwalker.
Imagine releasing Zereth Mortis directly against Elpis. I've never seen such devastation, especially when it was not intended.

I took one look at the uglification they put Alexstrasza through in order to appease the twitter/reddit culture that will whine about an attractive woman, then gush all over some excessively sexualized male. You cannot convince me there is "good stuff" in dragonflight.

nah to be fair sexy alexstrazsa was way better and there was no reason to change the design other than to update the character model. blizzard way over-compensated when they went back and censored the game during the sexual harassment drama. it's also really weird going back to old content and see her like 3 feet shorter than every other character around her. don't see how she's ugly though. it's especially weird when nozdormu still walks around mostly shirtless and looking like he's covered in moisturizer.

the art direction this expansion kinda sucks. i don't really like how the dragons look in general anymore. everything looks too soft and went way too heavy into disney afternoon territory.

Apparently they're doing a new version of Classic with new class abilities? Like Warlocks and Rogues can tank and Mages can heal. Sounds cool.
