Not any of you specifically.

Dangerous laser strikes topped all previous records in 2023. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) received 13,304 reports from pilots last year, a 41 percent increase over 2022.

Shining a laser at an aircraft is a serious safety threat. Many types of high-powered lasers can incapacitate pilots, many of whom are flying airplanes with hundreds of passengers. Pilots have reported 313 injuries since the FAA began recording data on laser strikes in 2010.

The FAA is committed to maintaining the safest air transportation system in the world. Aiming a laser at an aircraft is a serious safety hazard that puts everyone on the plane and on the ground at risk, said FAA Administrator Michael Whitaker.

People who shine lasers at aircraft face FAA fines of up to $11,000 per violation and up to $30,800 for multiple laser incidents. Violators can also face criminal penalties from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

I didn't even know this was a thing. Can a normal cat/presentation pointer reach planes, or are people getting their hands on more powerful beams?

I was in my backyard a couple days ago and saw an airplane and remembered how people point lasers at them. The first thought I had was "Can a regular laser even make it that far?" But yes, it's a terrible thing to do. I recall seeing footage of what the people in the cockpit see. It's blinding. They can also zoom in and see exactly who's doing it.

Yeah, I can remember many years ago (back when these things were all the rage), I pointed one at a water tower near my house and could see the laser on it. It's not like a flashlight where it's just going to shine maybe up to 20 feet ahead of you.

A bullet keychain isn't going to reach an airplane except at extremely low altitudes. This is literally people using specialized lasers just to be assholes.

Nearly all incidents of laser attacks occur at under a mile in range during takeoff or landing.

Was showing some folks a laser pointer a number of years back and how you could use it to point out stars and whatnot, let the one guy try it and said "do not shine it at aircraft" and he literally says "like this?" and picks out the first aircraft he sees and shines the laser at it. Amazingly enough, people are that stupid. I promptly took it away from him and have never let anyone use one of my laser pointers since.

Yeah. The FAA and pilots do not fuck around with being lasered. It can be a difference of 15 minutes between lasering a plane and being arrested. And rightfully so.

I had someone tag the plane I was in with a green laser a few months ago. I don't understand: is it something you can see reflecting on the plane? I can't imagine why someone would want to shine a laser at an airplane.
