SALEM, Ore. (AP) The Oregon Supreme Court said Thursday that 10 Republican state senators who staged a record-long walkout last year to stall bills on abortion, transgender health care and gun rights cannot run for reelection. The decision upholds the secretary of states decision to disqualify the senators from the ballot under a voter-approved measure aimed at stopping such boycotts. Measure 113, passed by voters in 2022, amended the state constitution to bar lawmakers from reelection if they have more than 10 unexcused absences. I actually don't like the law, sometimes boycotts will be justified and you'd wish they were possible. That said, fuck these guys. Not for boycotting but for their trash ideology and actions.

Seems good at first glance, but this sounds like the type of thing that could bar even legitimate absenteeist protests. I don't think we need to worry about Oregon Dems doing something insanely evil, but if such a provision was in the hands of a state run by wannabe fascists taking away opposition walkout abilities to deny a quorum seems like it would be blatantly bad.

I can definitely see that, but the article did mention several times the amendment allowing this was something Oregon voters approved as well. Whether or not they intended it to be enforced in this way is another storybut I wont pretend to be sad about getting some reprehensible GOP politicians out of office (eventually) and keeping them out of it. --- Hmm... ...
