In health news, wastewater testing shows the U.S. is in its greatest COVID-19 surge since Omicron, making it the second-largest surge of the pandemic. Around 1,500 people in the U.S. are still dying from COVID every week. Public health experts say two of the main reasons are waning immunity and not enough people accessing treatments and vaccinations.

Rates of infection are up globally, as well. The WHO reports 10,000 COVID deaths were recorded in December, while hospitalizations increased in dozens of countries. In Spain, authorities have reissued face mask mandates in health facilities.

Is that article still accurate? It was dated last month, January 11th.

sad, even the news doesn't care anymore. if we were attacked by someone and 1500 americans were dying from the attacks it would be headline breaking news, but no one just doesn't give a fuck anymore. esp republicans are doing the opposite - encouraging people to avoid the vaccine saying the vaccine kills people

The flu is rocking people here. We still have Covid patients but it's not nearly as bad as it's been in ages. I'm not disputing data, just locally Covid isn't hospitalizing as many folks.

You need to get vaccinated too, not just mask up...

I just had my first case of covid a few weeks ago. It was mild (for covid), but I was still very happy when the paxlovid kicked in.

IMO it's worth it to at least keep up with boosters etc. I can see having an annual covid vaccine booster becoming a routine for sensible people that can take it, just like flu shots.

I wish we could go back to lockdown without all the people losing their jobs .

Blood for the capitalism god. I'm a seven times vaccinated person and I still got the second strain of covid I lost 2 days of work and felt like I was totally winded for about 2 weeks

The covid epidemic really led to many right wing shitbirds fully exposing themselves as the oxygen thieves they are.

Hospitals in my area are packed, it's difficult to get a bed.
