137... falling further behind, but I got sick again last night and just didn't feel like doing anything. 7 songs doesn't quite make up for another unplanned day off, but is still more than my 5 songs target.

...Okay, I hate how this site wants to automatically renumber lists. If I put a number followed by a period, it'll change that number to "1". Like, no, you stupid site, I want to put "150" followed by a break but apparently I can't do that so now there's all this arbitrary text added around it.

...Anyway, unusually good progress today, that makes up for some of the delays.

Couple of notes:

1, I shall be taking a few days off here. I've been typing quite a bit lately and it's going to be best if I rest my wrists for two or three days before I wind up doing something stupid and actually hurting myself.

2, I'm going to cheat and fill the last two slots with *mystery songs* that are important to me *for reasons*. Honestly, they represent two phases of my life and I need to take some time to reflect on my history for personal reasons, so I'm going to pretend these songs were nominated so that I can properly evaluate them. It'll be therapeutic for me or something.

...honestly, they'll probably just be in this weird spot where they're not really part of the ranking (the lowest song will be in 328th place since there's only 328 real nominations), but will be posted at the place where they would be eliminated had they actually been nominated. Which is stupid, but... well I'm doing it because it's something I feel I *need* to do for reasons which will probably be elaborated on when they come up. So, nominations are officially closed as of now.

SONG PROGRESS: 156/330-ish. Work will resume on Monday.

Thanks, I'll update my notes when I get back to work tomorrow. Also, I hopefully have a friend from another board coming by to get us to 330 actual nominations soon; instead of me adding two "not real nominations", I'll just take a moment to share a personal story every 80 eliminations or so, which works so much better than the old plan.

174/330

Good progress, but not quite as much as I was hoping for... I was hoping that I could still get the most basic, preliminary version of the list done before the 1st but that isn't anywhere near the amount I'd have to do each day to pull that off (and I don't know that I could keep this pace up for the rest of the week, much less the 30 songs a day I'd need to be pushing for). Ah well. Good progress is good progress, I suppose.

250/330

I'm conflicted. On the one hand, 26 songs is an incredible amount of progress. On the other, I spent significantly more time on this yesterday than usual and thought there would have been more progress... with only three days left until the target date and less time available for each of them, it's not looking as hopeful as I might have liked.

....Though I only have to manage 27 songs a day... if I can find a way to maintain the level of progress, then I can just barely pull it off. Not going to be easy though with less time.

Don't worry about meeting a target imo

It's good advice and I normally wouldn't--see my original target of 5 songs per day, failing to meet that on a regular basis, and still taking multiple days off--but... I've kinda got some real world stuff coming up in early April and will be needing to take a short break. Shouldn't be anything too long, I should be back to a more regular schedule no later than the 10th. BUT... I was going to take a break after finishing the first draft anyway, so if I could sync my times off that would be really convenient.

Also, it'd be one less thing to worry about and I like having emergency escape options available; in the unlikely event I need a far more extended break, then I can always just post the first drafts and say that a very abridged ranking happened. I'm not planning on that, I just tend to get overly anxious and paranoid about things, and having that option would alleviate a bit of stress.

38-ish, and I'm going back on break. This Fandom bullshit has got me really pissed off and this emotional state is... ill-suited for working. Okay, so this Fandom bullshit isn't going away and honestly I don't think the orignal plan for this topic is going to work. Trying to listen to everything twice and then start the topic might take too long; frankly, the way Fandom is going, I don't expect this place to be around long enough for me to make three full trips through the list. Even if the board technically exists in the future, some of these songs are pretty political, so there's pretty decent odds of the topic itself being banned. If not now, then whenever Fandom really stats cracking down. So, fuck it, we're changing everything.

END OF THE WORLD RULE CHANGES

1: Bonus Noms!

If you find your way to this topic and want to add more songs, then nominations are officially open until... whenever the bottom 50 songs have been eliminated. We'll say that will probably be in early May. Rankings start April 29th, around ten eliminations per day, noms lock after 50 eliminations.

1a: If you used 15 nominations, you may have one extra song!

1b: If you used between 11 and 14 nominations, you may add until you reach 15 noms.

1c: 10 or less allows you five extra noms! This includes people with 0 used nominations, though I don't anticipate anyone else appearing.

(I would prefer additional nominations be no longer than 7 minutes. There's a hard cap of no longer than 10 minutes.)

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10NlOo6cjWLEyjuYZmRoxNnUGy_vWmO3sSegM-gwtb3Q/htmlview

Spreadsheet of current nominations. I'll try to add a second tab sorted by nominator so it's easier to see how many you used, but that has to wait until the morning.

2: Songs will only get two Ratings; an Initial Rating and a Final Rating. Sorry, but we're speeding things up. Hopefully, the extra noms ease the sting a bit.

3: The topic is going to be significantly more "live" than usual. Since songs tend to rise and fall hundreds of spaces, actually posting eliminations in order is going to be impossible; so... you can expect songs to have a Final Rating and we won't know exactly where that places them on the list until everything is finalized. (Rankings have always been fairly provisional, but expect them to be even more so this time.)

4: There are a few extra songs I'm going to talk about for personal reasons, so please do not nominate any of the following tracks:

Duckman - We Are There
The Monkees - Gonna Buy Me A Dog
Tat-Ming Pair - Roller Skating
Theory of a Deadman - Santa Monica

5: No promises that this will finish, though we'll try our best. Between the forums being on borrowed time, my emotional spikes making it hard to stay motivated, and the volatile nature of some subjects... well, we'll see what happens.

@CJones

Since you don't come here, and stated you really wanted more nomination slots, I'll tag you directly. Everyone else... eh, hopefully anyone who truly wanted more songs finds their own way. (Honestly, I'll tag everyone when the ranking starts and they'll have a few days left then anyway.)

-

Apologies. I know this isn't how anyone wanted things to go; scaling back to only two listens instead of three sucks, but I want to get things started ASAP. And adding nominations after they've been locked is stupid, but I'm treating this as likely my final topic and I want everyone to have a chance to get a final song in. Allowing noms after the topic has started is really stupid, but I don't want to divert any attention from VGMC & I also don't want any further delays, so... well, whatever. I'm the one in charge tonight and I say this is what's happening.

To those who've supported us over the years and to those only now tuning in, thank you for everything.

Good advice, but from my perspective, it's basically already dead. I'm too old and bitter to coach my language in newspeak to avoid being censored by idiots who want to prevent people from being able to discuss actual issues. This topic series was always a safe place where I could work out my thoughts and feelings without constraints... and now that there are constraints, I feel unwelcome in what was once my home. And because everything is political in some way & the "no politics" rule is so incredibly, intentionally vague there's no telling where the line is.

For example, let's take a quick glance at that "Minnie the Moocher" nomination. A classic song about a homeless woman who falls into drug addiction, loses her grip on reality, and probably dies tragically. (At best, the "Poor Min" outro is lamenting the inevitability of a tragic demise, so we'll say "pretty well damned" even if she's legally defined as alive by the end of the song). It's not a political song, however you cannot engage with it without at least thinking about politics; about the way America has historically treated its homeless population, the inability for drug addicts to access the help they need, and the fact that tragedies like Min's continue to happen to this very day.

Now, I'm not saying that I want to discuss these politics. These are complicated issues and I do not have the education, nor life experience, to offer any real insight. However, we've gone from "I am not discussing the real world issues this song brings up because I am ill-suited to the task, but I do like that the song is inspiring me to reflect on things" to "I am not discussing the real world issues this song brings up because I don't want my topic locked". And crucially, I don't think anyone knows where the actual line for moderation is, because Fandom is intentionally leaving it so broad that it can mean anything our corporate overlords want it to mean.

And, I really must stress this, Minnie the Moocher is not even close to being the most political song in the topic. But politics are so fundamentally baked into everything we see and hear that "no politics" is basically the same as "no music". And I'm not sure I even want to hang around a dystopian shithole where we all have to only interact with media in the most absolutely banal, base level ways because capitalism decided thinking was bad for business.

Yeah, up to five more songs. Part of me would like to offer the full 15 to everyone, but the song list would balloon wildly out of control if everyone took me up on the offer... so 5 more feels like a good compromise; or at least a "yeah, if I aim for 10 songs a day, that would be up to two nominators worth of extra songs per day... that sounds reasonable" compromise.

That didn't even occur to me, but great! Glad that worked out :)

Here are the two songs I definitely wanted to nominate:

Wintersun - Winter Madness (5:08)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpoLe2v6MVo

15 years later, and this song still has, hands down, my favorite guitar solo of all time. And the rest of the song is pretty awesome too.

Ayreon - Dawn of a Million Souls (7:40)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=141Eg1IsmeU

I've been on a huge Ayreon kick recently. Arjen Lucassen writes these rock/metal operas, then gets his friends to perform them. If you ever get the chance, listen to The Human Equation. However, I think this particular song, from The Universal Migrator, works well enough on it's own that I can recommend it. The short version of the plot is that the last man in existence is using a device called the Dream Sequencer to witness the history of Earth and the universe.

This song is very NSFW, but not in an overly vulgar or inappropriate way. Keep in mind, these are two sinners in hell, trapped in soul contracts, singing about how screwed they are... and that's okay. Misery loves company, and at least they have each other ;)

And yes, that is Keith David.

Songs up to post #197 should be added to the spreadsheet now. Also fixed a minor formatting issue with the "sort by song title" tab where I accidentally had a space in front of two or three song titles causing them to be sorted incorrectly.

Last two nominations. This took some thought, but here's what I'm going with.

Coheed & Cambria - Window of the Waking Mind (8:38)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WscFSf_OjHA

The finale to the album of the same name. I would really like to have nominated the last 4 tracks together, since they clearly are meant to go together. But that would have been way over the limit, both time wise and in number of nominations. If you like this, definitely go back and listen to everything from Our Love through to the end.

Yes, there is a plot behind Coheed & Cambria. No, I have no idea what it is. I just really like their music. Plus, this song is obviously about autism, something I can definitely relate to.

Arthur Sullivan - The Lost Chord (4:22)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAzwQF_vm2o

And now for something COMPLETELY different. Arthur Sullivan, of Gilbert and Sullivan fame, wrote this for his brother, Fred Sullivan's funeral in 1877. It is one of my all time favorite pieces of music. It is difficult to find a good rendition of this song, partly because it's written for pipe organ and high tenor. But also because it's just not very well known.

This particular recording is of tenor Webster Booth and organist Anne Ziegler. It was recorded in 1939, hence the relatively poor sound quality.

I'm a better than average singer, and my mother plays the organ, and I wish I could sing this. But I sing bass, so this is WAY outside my range, especially at the end.

And there you go, that's all my nominations. I look forward to hearing what you think, especially of that last one ;)

Bonus "songs": Just a couple awesome things I've run across on Youtube. No need to rank these, unless you really want to. They're both very short.

Boomhauer sings Rap God
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmmHoam7y5U

I've listened to this at least a dozen times and it's still one of the funniest things I've ever heard.

If System of a Down Were from India
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mi106DZJhuQ

This is actually awesome, and I would buy this album, if it existed. Sadly, I've heard that these two women have broken up, which makes this becoming a reality even less likely.
