Actors and musicians tend to be in a bit of a different category since they're typically not taking advantage of a labor force or preferencing investors.

The person themselves are the commodity that is leveraged for profit.

Sure they are. You think her mixers and editors and all the random studio employees that make her albums happen have their own private jets too?

People just don't think about the mountain of workers who make celebrities succeed because they're not in the spotlight.

No but I don't think they're paid minimum wage either.

She paid a bunch for her truckers on her tour a 100k bonus. The band that currently performs with her on the Eras tour are still the same ones she has had since she was a teenager. Several of her backup singers have been around for a decade too I believe.

Sounds like it's a pretty sweet gig to work for her.

Don't know where it was, not even 100% on the details but from what I understand someone basically died from heat exhaustion or something because they couldn't bring in their own water nor could afford the overpriced ones being sold. Seems like an incredibly easy thing to circumnavigate for a multi-billionaire--insist water is freely available or even provide it at your own cost, which for her would be a drop in the bucket, if you'll pardon the phrasing.

A fair point, but I don't know that "she treats her inner circle well" absolves her of what made her a billionaire any more than "this CEO pays his VPs extremely well" either. The guy refilling her jet or running the concessions stand at her concerts isn't getting a 100K bonus. The artists making merch and ads for her shows and new releases aren't either. Her media empire runs on the backs of all the same people CEOs use.

I don't think band members or dancers or truckers would be considered a part of an 'inner' circle if we compared it to a corporation. Even then these CEO billionaires are not known for treating their inner circle well at all. Bill Gates screwed many people over and stamped on the competition to boost Microsoft. Steve Jobs was a known asshole. They made an entire movie about how Mark Zuckerberg screwed over his friend to take control of Facebook. Elon Musk invests into companies and then takes sole credit of their work.

Taylor Swift is almost universally praised by anyone who directly works with her and attempts to boost the people she works with. There's this small little detail she has in her concert where she refers to the show itself as 'we' and 'us' and not just herself. Even though most people would see it her concert. That's the little detail that comes naturally to her. We can debate all we like if it's put on or not to boost her image but it's something that she has consistently accomplished over her entire career. That is not something I can say about many other billionaires outside of maybe the guy who runs Costco.

Btw people running the concession stands or fill her plane aren't her employees. They'd work for the venue and airport.

The issue here is I feel you're misattributing all this to her. It's her media empire the same way a movie star has a film empire; they get a contract with a studio or production company and the ceo and board of those companies are the ones that decide all this. You're getting mad at another cog in the wheel of the entertainment industry, albeit a well paid and highly visible one so long as they don't get ripped off in their contract.

Think about it this way; if there was no entertainment industry she could still make music for people, but nobody is going to be the CEO of a record company.

And considering all the strikes related to the future of AI in entertainment, they're a cog the suits would be just as happy without.

Yep that's what I was getting at originally. The musician itself is the commodity and the business.

Amazon can continue without Bezos. There's no more Taylor Swift music or concerts after she retires. That business is effectively done outside of riding on her previous work.

She basically took over the city of Sydney while she was here. There was footage of her arriving from her private jet and people were at the airport hoping to see her. It's just a different stratosphere in comparison to ordinary people.

Now maybe she doesn't need to use the jet as much as she does. But I also don't really have all of that information. Some people do fall for the trap that just because they can track the plane it doesn't mean she is on it. From memory she hires it out for other people.

Also in this same weekend in Sydney Katy Perry arrived by private jet to play a private concert for a billionaire and then flew back the next day. Barely any noise about that. So it seems like it's more about Taylor Swift doing it than celebrities or rich people doing it if that makes sense.

If there were no entertainment industry she wouldn't be a billionaire. To stick with the CEO example, completely absolving her of how the studios treat their employees is a bit like giving Elon Musk a pass for the cobalt mines used in making his batteries. It's a company saying that their subcontractors aren't their responsibility. Calling her a cog pretends she isn't a billionaire with significant sway and influence.

I'm not saying she doesn't do good things. I'm saying the billionaire isn't as clean as people want to pretend because she gave truckers a bonus once.

EDIT: but this is what I think gets to the crux of the issue:

We're cool with her being a billionaire because we attribute all that success to her and her alone. "She earned it." Why would she be immune to that old meme of "when you hit a billion dollars you get a trophy that says you win capatalism and you never make another dollar after that"? Would she stop making music if she stopped getting paid and was "stuck" at only a billion dollars?

She's the poster child for the wider issue of extreme private jet use because her jet gets used the most, that's all. Before her it was boring business tycoons, the only difference is that people actively like her so it's somehow become a more contentious issue. I doubt if we were talking about Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg there'd be quite as many people jumping to their defense.

But it wasn't though? In basically any music biopic there's a scene of them flying in a private jet to show how far they've come. Even high value wrestlers are flown in private jets at times.

When a person is that much of a commodity then yeah they're going to be flown around in a private jet. Especially when they need to be in a certain places at a certain times because millions of dollars are potentially on the line.

Don't know if you've taken a flight lately, but things are changing. Prices have soared and all over the place are reminders about how we need to consider how much we're really flying and the impact of climate change. Lots of conversations and PSA's about taking staycations instead. So maybe it's less about taylor swift and more about this particular type of human excess being cast in the spotlight as a growing social issue.

I understand the economics of why taylor swift gets flown around privately. That still isn't to me a very good argument for why I should be cool with it. I am not better off knowing that taylor can get to her next gig without having to run shoulders with the peons.

I'm not sure what you are saying here. Because she has money she needs to donate to everyone she comes in contact with? The people refilling her jet do not even work for her. She is not responsible for the wages of every single human that works in her industry simply because she is extremely popular and rich. Do you give an extra hundred dollars to every waitress, grocery store clerk, fast food worker that works to give you a service? You are getting services off the backs of their work so I guess you better get to giving them tips or extra money.

Prices for flights are soaring and yet airlines like United Airlines and Qantas are making record profits anyway.

The focus on global warming really shouldn't be on people not traveling overseas for a vacation or famous people taking a private plane. Air traffic is 2-3% of global emissions every year while cars take up 10%.

Well...
https://www.delicious.com.au/eat-out/latest-news/article/taylor-swift-eats-out-pellegrino-2000-sydney/2jn6qhfe

Rather than booking out the entire venue, Swift and her support act Sabrina Carpenter sat alongside other guests while enjoying their dinner.
Swift and Carpenter enjoyed a meal of focaccia, olives, pasta dishes, sides, and wine the bill landing at around $620. For their efforts, the Pellegrino team also earned a whopping $300 tip.

Celebrity culture is weird as fuck lol.

Funnily enough the stories online about generous celebrity tips are all from actors and musicians lol

That money should theoretically come in the form of bonuses given by the owner who made a lot of extra profit because she patronized the store.

You're suggesting she just buy out any restaurant she goes to and takes over the staff payroll.

I'm not saying she's a bad person. I'm saying she's a billionaire and token gestures don't absolve her of that fact. The Eras tour made over a billion dollars. 500K in bonuses to a trucking company is amazing. It's also 0.05% the amount the tour made. Granted, she didn't personally make all that money, but the point is celebrities and artists who become billionaires aren't exempt from the claim that billionaires only get that rich off the backs of people who won't see a share of that profit.

EDIT: should be 5M not 500K, so half of a percent of the revenue that the tour made.
