Did I get that right? Ive only played 7 out of those so far.

Id add 4 as well, but stories werent as fleshed out back then. 5 has fun, goofy one. 8 has a story...silly and ridiculous at times, but its there. 12 has a pretty amazing story that mostly stays in the background. 13 pretty cutscenes telling you a lot of non sensical jargon for which you have to read codex entries to fully understand. 15 is 30% of a story. And 16 we finally got back a pretty fleshed out story with emotional payouts.

2 has a pretty decent story but it's hidden behind experimental game design that turns off a lot of players

7's story is terrible and 10's is just ok

6 and 9 are the true standouts, but especially 9. 4 has a good story for what it was and sets up many of the staples of the series.

For the time 4 was good. I liked 8s too and 15s

Only downside is that it's an MMO so you have the monthly charge, forced multiplayer (although they've been working on making it more solo accessible), and overall MMO game design with daily quests and caps and such to deal with.

The second paragraph is exactly why not many people are talking about it, as that automatically means we havent and wont play it.

Maybe when I'm old and crippled I'll play through the FF series. I started with 7 and worked up to 12 and then quit because I hated 12. But I'd probably rank them T>7>10>9>8>12

2 was crazy how you can just break the game.

Oh yeah, Tactics has a great story.

14 and 16 have good stories as well (though 16's ending is garbage).

I'm only a few hours into 4, but its story isn't bad either. It's just a lot simpler for its time.

14's story is great, but I was just counting the mainline entries in my post, sonce TC didn't specify wanting to play the online ones.

Tactics is also one of the best stories told in the franchise, but I consider it separate enough from the rest to not include it (TRPGs aren't everyone's cup o' tea).

16 has the best story since 10 and is top 3 stories in the franchise.

CE is largely anti mmo. We have mmo players here but they are a minority. Many Final Fantasy fans refuse to touch 14

Final Fantasy VIII is weird in the sense that I definitely can not say the story is good as a whole especially because some of the dialogue is terrible but it has great concepts.

It's like if you got an art book of a game that never existed and you used magic to force it to be a video game. Shit won't make sense, things will be frankensteined together, but what's good is very good.

There's a lot of good shit there, there's also a lot of bad shit, and there's also shit that could have been amazing that was later forced to be bad.

I know that sounds terrible but I mostly want to see if any other ff8 fans agree with me lol.

This game would benefit greatly from a remake but they would literally need to change the story itself. A 1:1 story remake wouldn't do it justice.

FFVIII tried to do too many different things at once and a lot of it is stapled together. For a quick face value example of how good the best parts of FFVIII are, simply watch the intro. It has one of the best, if not the best FF intro sequence to date.

I read somewhere recently the claim that the reason FF8 is so weird is the translation got fucked up. Supposedly the story is good in the Japanese version

My only complaint is that it's too easy. Everything else was fucking on point.

Some of the complaints that I've heard is that Tidus is whiny. It's a fucking jrpg for God's sake....

Oh, trust me, I totally get it. I spent about 10 years in FF14 and have no intention of going back to it. But the topic was asking specifically about stories, not gameplay; even if I don't enjoy playing the game anymore, I can't deny that the actual story content is pretty great.

I remember back in the day reading a bilingual dude who loved VIII go through the English localization and compare it to the Japanese one. The Japanese dialogue was so much better.

Fortunately, SE got much better at localization after that.

Honestly, I never understood this critique. Tidus was a young kid who had to suffer through abuse/abandonment from his dad, death of his mother, the realization that he's not even a real person, and on top of that is forced to kill his dad after realizing that he actually did a lot of good for the world? Jesus Christ, if I had to go through all that, I'd be a wreck, too.

XII is loved by people for reasons I cannot comprehend. The overall story is just...not good, even if certain elements of it are.

All the other FF have 'human' protagonists, let's make the environment be the main character this time, that would be XII.

I even know some guy irl who likes Vaan the most out of any FF character ever and he's a weirdo.

XII to me is just Star Wars worship. Its mid. The story is mid, I hate the combat system, I dont like the idea of Vaan being the protag but not the protag if that makes sense. They went for something different and I applaud them for it but its not for me and thats fine. Id like to enjoy it but I cant. Maybe Ill try again soon.

The scuttlebutt on XII was that Vaan and Panelo were added at the last minute on the whims of execs at Square who wanted pretty people in the game to sell it to young teen audiences. So the reason that their characterization is lacking is because they didn't have enough time to tie them into the story in any meaningful way. This is even before the mess that was the game's development is taken into account (no one's fault on that last part: the director fell seriously ill about...halfway through development, IIRC, and had to quit the company).

I knew a dude who liked Vaan over all other FF protags too. It did not make sense to me why someone with zero character development and barely any dialogue in the second half of the game is a favorite, but whatever.

To Max: yes, I would agree with XII being Star Wars worship. But I would hardly call the game mid. "Subpar" would be a better word, in my mind.

What I liked the most about XII was hunting the creatures on the hunt board. And that's sad that that's what I liked about it.

Lmao. 16's story is only good for 50% of the game then it becomes a clusterfuck. FF14 has the best story for FF standards and that's only because it's an MMO so they can actually build things up. Once you look past the horrible pacing, anyway.

6 if you like ensemble casts
7 if youre a chuunibyou
9 if you have pre 6 nostalgia
10 if you unironically wear crocs

14(ARR, as recommended ITT)'s story is overwrought, overdramatic, and overstays its welcome
the only lengthy story in its history with a well paced and interesting campaign is heavensward
shadowbringers has the best characters, but it's paced like shit

the story is decent if you recognize that vaan was only added as a surrogate main character after both ashe *and* basch, didn't do well with target audiences

but yeah, 12 pretty much borrowed the 11 (best in the franchise, as far as combat goes) battle system and rigged it so that non-player characters had programmable scripting

tbh there's something super satisfying about learning and fortifying certain skills/characters to the point where the player no longer has to babysit, and the part can farm experience/items on auto-command

I think 10 sucks ass but the others you listed range from good to fantastic

4 was good, if bit basic now. 12, 14, and 16 are really good. My only complaint about 12 is it needed more character moments.
