So on a whim I decided to look up who the original cereal mascot was (It's Cap'n Crunch, by the way, unless you count the Quaker Oats Man for oatmeal), and I found this.
Kelloggs Corn Flakes were first sold commercially in the US in 1906, making their way across the world and reaching Australia in the early 1920s. A strict Seventh-Day Adventist, John Kellogg initially marketed the cereal as a healthy, ready-to-eat, anti-masturbatory morning meal." In a freakish episode of history, Kellogg wrote that masturbation led to poor digestion, memory loss, impaired vision, heart disease, epilepsy and insanity to name just a few of its supposed insidious side effects. Cap'n Crunch Tony the Tiger Lucky the Leprechaun Trix Rabbit Those four are probably the most recognizable to modern audiences, at least in the US - not sure if other countries have different mascots. Such is the power of Tony the Tiger that he is the only one of my four who doesn't have his product in his name and he still conjures up the product. Tony also has possibly the most recognizable catchphrase among the cereal mascots, though the Trix Rabbit is close. Does Cap'n Crunch even have a catchphrase? Trix Rabbit has an ongoing storyline in a way that the other mascots don't have ("storyline" might be generous but his commercials have plots, albeit the same plot). Lucky has sort of the opposite story ("they're always after me Lucky Charms!"), but I don't associate it with him as much as I associate the tragedy of the Trix Rabbit with the rabbit. Then again, it might just be me - the "lucky charms" line is pretty enmeshed in pop culture. Either way, they're both on the Rushmore, so why split hares (get it). This topic really showcases how US-heavy this place is. You guys realize Count Chocula or Cap'n Crunch basically didn't exist in Europe for a long time right, heck, even now. So I can't imagine them existing easily in Africa or Asia.
