https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/boeing-plane-sudden-drop-new-zealand-probes-787-passenger-roof-rcna142915

A passenger has told NBC News of the dramatic incident that saw people aboard a Boeing flight thrown into the ceiling, as authorities probed what caused the plane's sudden mid-air plunge.

More than a dozen people were rushed to the hospital on Monday and at least 50 injured after a LATAM airlines flight traveling from Sydney, Australia to Auckland, New Zealand experienced a strong shake, officials said.

Authorities in New Zealand said Tuesday they were seizing the black boxes from the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which had been due to continue on to Santiago, Chile.

"Everything was going well," said passenger Brian Jokat, who was sitting in a window seat as the flight headed toward New Zealand. Then all of a sudden, the plane took a nosedive down.

People were flying out of their seats, hitting the roof, being thrown back four or five aisles back, Jokat, 61, said in a telephone interview.

Jokat said that while he had his seatbelt on, the passenger in the aisle seat of his row didnt.

I saw him lying on the ceiling looking down at me, he said. He was fully out-stretched, Jokat said. And then bang, I looked behind and everyone was falling off the ceilings, he added.

Jokat said the seatbelt, which he rarely wears during cruising altitude, saved him from the injuries.

But those days are over. I will always keep my seatbelt on, he said. Because what I saw in that plane was people flying like ragdolls.

LATAM Airlines Flight LA800 was carrying 263 passengers along with 9 crew members, the Santiago-based airline said in a statement Tuesday. The flight landed at its scheduled time of 4:26 p.m. Monday (11:26 p.m. Sunday ET) in Auckland after its 2-hour, 42-minute flight.

The plane "experienced a strong shake whose causes are being investigated," the airline said.

Emergency services treated about 50 patients, 12 of whom were taken to the hospital, New Zealands emergency medical service provider Hato Hone St John Ambulance, said in a statement Monday.

The airline said most of those were discharged shortly after and that only two people needed medical attention but without any life-threatening risks.

The aircrafts pilot told the passengers the flight had suffered equipment failure for a few seconds, causing the plane to drop for almost 500 feet in the air, Jokat said. He said my gauges went down, everything went down for one or two seconds and they just lit up again and continued to function, Jokat added.

Some people broke right through the ceiling. So you can see all the wires inside, Jokat said.

New Zealands Transport Accident Investigation Commission is investigating the accident, saying in a statement Tuesday that it was seizing the cockpit voice and flight data recorders.

Chile has appointed a representative to participate in the investigation, the Chilean aviation authority said Monday in a post on X.

Boeing said in a statement Monday that it was gathering more information and will provide any support needed by our customer.

The plane manufacturer has been under fire for multiple safety incidents and technical snags in recent months.

And there's nothing really we can do about it either. Ask Lockheed Martin to make commercial planes?

1. Boeing Commercial Airplane Co. in Everett, Washington has the largest manufacturing site in the world. Employing 30,000 individuals, it opened in 1967 to manufacture 747s. Since then it has grown to encompass 98.7 acres, and is the worlds largest building in terms of volume.

2. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. in Fort Worth, Texas has a workforce of 16,400. Lockheed Martin never forgot its small-town roots. The company supports its smaller manufacturers with accelerated payments.

3. The Boeing Co. in St. Louis, Missouri employs 16,000 workers. The Boeing Co. is Americas largest manufacturing exporter, and the St. Louis site houses the Prologue Room. This museum showcases pioneers in aviation and their achievements.

4. The Boeing Co. in Renton, Washington employs 12,000 workers, ranking fourth in the industry. This Boeing location is a significant site in the global aerospace industry, renowned for its production of commercial airplanes, defense products, and space systems. The Renton site has a rich history dating back to World War II and continues to be a hub of innovation and production in the aerospace industry, contributing to Boeings presence in more than 150 countries.

5. Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. is located in Savannah, Georgia. Its 9,638 employees build and service high-end privately-owned aircraft. The companys close attention to customer service includes more factory-owned service centers than any other aircraft manufacturer.

6. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. in Poway, California started as a part of General Dynamics in 1954. The 8+ million square-foot site houses 9,000 workers. They manufacture unmanned aircraft, power changing systems and remote viewing products.

7. Sikorsky, A Lockheed Martin Co. in Stratford, Connecticut has led the world in helicopter manufacturing since 1923. Igor Sikorsky's invention remains a base for both military and non-military missions to this day. Currently, the company's 7,500 workers keep up Mr. Sikorskys vision.

8. Boeing Commercial Airplanes in North Charleston, South Carolina employs a crew of 7,000 to create the safest commercial flights. The companys Confident Travel Initiative eases travelers' minds with cleaning and disinfecting routines.

9. Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. in Littleton, Colorado and its 7,000 employees create the GPS systems that serve commercial and military clients. They also invented a shell that protects travelers in outer space.

10. Textron Aviation, Inc. in Wichita, Kansas manufactures Beechcraft, Cessna and Hawker aircraft. With a workforce of 5,400 employees, Textron Aviation customizes its planes to meet customer needs.

Yes, apparently.

From whistleblower testimony:

He said in some cases, sub-standard parts had even been removed from scrap bins and fitted to planes that were being built to prevent delays on the production line.
It established that the location of at least 53 "non-conforming" parts in the factory was unknown, and that they were considered lost. Boeing was ordered to take remedial action.
On the oxygen cylinders issue, the company said that in 2017 it had "identified some oxygen bottles received from the supplier that were not deploying properly". But it denied that any of them were actually fitted on aircraft.

They're sabotaging their planes and risking everyone's lives because they don't wanna shell out for QA, or RnD, but they'll shell the fuck out for stock buybacks and congressional bribes.

I went to their plant to pick up a KC-46 to bring back to my base, and it took them an additional 24 hours for us to do our acceptance inspection. The damn plane had a severe fuel leak the night prior during its final flight. Apparently, it came from final assembly about 2 years prior but every time it flew, it developed a new severe issue.

Nah. They're legitimately a shit company.

https://jacobin.com/2024/01/boeing-spirit-safety-regulations-airlines

Excerpts from the link, in case you don't wish to read the whole thing:

Last weeks high-altitude debacle in which a door plug manufactured by Spirit blew off an Alaska Airlines plane mid-flight over Portland, Oregon followed two Boeing aircraft crashes in 2018 and 2019 that together killed 346 people, and another fatal incident in 2018 that saw a woman partially sucked out of a plane when a small engine explosion shattered a window.

On Monday, the Lever reported allegations from Spirit employees of excessive defects in the suppliers manufacturing. According to court documents, the workers said they were instructed to conceal the problems. Some workers who spoke up were fired, according to allegations stemming from a new federal lawsuit.

While Spirit workers were allegedly being told to falsify inspection reports and ship out products to Boeing as quickly as possible, the company was doling out campaign cash to lawmakers who then fought for the companys interests in Washington.

Over the last four years, Boeing and Spirits political action committees and employees have together reported spending more than $65 million on lobbying and federal campaign contributions. That includes Spirit donors spending $210,000 lobbying Congress on advanced aviation manufacturing and other issues in the first three quarters of 2023, disclosures show.

In the first three quarters of 2023, Boeing donors spent more than $10.6 million the sixteenth most of any US company lobbying the White House, lawmakers, the FAA, and other regulators on Aviation safety, certifications, and other issues. The companys lobbying expenditures have ranged between $12.6 million and $15.2 million annually since 2018.

Of late, Boeing has been pressing regulators at the FAA to weaken safety standards for its new 737 MAX 7 models.

Theres mounting evidence that Boeing has known about myriad safety issues and critics say the company has done little to properly address them. Boeing officials were aware of the faulty safety sensors that led to crashes in 2018 and 2019.

In fact, messages sent between 2015 and 2018 among Boeing employees shows how they joked that the 737 MAX planes were designed by clowns who in turn are supervised by monkeys. Messages also show employees bragging about how they tricked a federal aviation regulator by making them feel stupid for trying to require additional training.

Boeing officials are also aware of potentially deadly side effects from an anti-ice system that can cause engine parts to overheat and break off mid-flight, but are seeking a safety exemption to allow the parts to be used.

787's have been flying for about 15 years. This is either something really obscure and really unfortunate, or some kind of maintenance/operation failure. I honestly wouldn't put money on either. I guess the third possibility is some kind of system update that didn't get properly tested.

Sad and distressing AF regardless.

Yes. And it doesn't matter if they actually hired a hit on him, or if they had simply pushed and threatened and lawyer'd him/his family to the point where he actually did himself off. Its Boeing's fault either way that he is dead now.

Suffice to say that the timing of the event is about on the same level of suspicious of someone in Russia falling out a window after saying bad things about the government. But even if Boeing is innocent of actually having someone shoot him, they would still be responsible for destroying his mental health over the years to the point where he did it himself.

Not commenting on Boeing, just wanna say, I always keep my seatbelt fastened while seated and I thought that was just common practice. Even without something horrific like they're describing, it could still suck during unexpected turbulence.

Don't flight attendants even ask you to keep it fastened while seated unless you need to get up for something?
