i drained it completely in january as someone recommended to do so. seemed like percentage was reading accurate for a short while, then wasn't again. recently went from 20 percent to 80 percent charge and the battery reading is still inaccurate.

for example i'll shut off the phone and turn it back on it'll either be at a higher or lower percentage, but always quickly drops off one of those percentages whether lower or higher.

not sure if this is the case with all phone types but did read they aren't always going to be super accurate, and really there is no real way to calibrate it and letting it deplete completely is a bad idea, your thoughts from your experience?

Battery readings are often not completely linear (like 100% to 50% will go much more slowly than 50% to 0% will), and both capacity and readings tend to get a bit wonky as the battery ages. If it's a few years old, the battery may just be wearing out. Either way, there isn't much you can/should do about it now, just go about your life until the battery capacity becomes a problem for you. At that point, you can see if you can get a new battery, or you might just want to go for a new phone.

the battery seems to last a long time, although i shut it off at night.

its only a year and nearly 3 months old. i hope it can last until 2027 when the updates stop. :'c

Your battery sounds faulty unfortunately. Had a secondhand Pixel doing this exact same thing.

You can buy a new battery and a replacement kit or send it off to get repaired. Otherwise there's not much to do.

@confusedtorchic

hey how have you been?

its always been a habit of mine. what do you think of this situation? its actually somewhat been like this since i got the phone, but kinda worsened up since the start of the year. the 0 to 100 thing kinda fixed it for a few weeks, but now i'm hearing that was a bad idea and most pixels don't have super accurate percentages as it is, so idk. :/

Nothing, it'll just get worse and worse until it can't hold a charge anymore.

i think that you are treating the situation as more serious than it is

i would only care about what the battery is doing if it stopped lasting a full day of use for me

turning it on is always going to cause it to use a lot more battery power, since that's just how that works with it needing to actually power and go through everything, which uses more processing power, which in turn just uses more power. that's just how everything works, really. max power usage at start and then it can go into idle and use less since it's able to turn things off that aren't being used.

you should also take into account that background processes can also hit the battery pretty hard. if i give my dexcom app free unfettered rein like it wants to, then it will absolutely drain the battery (and my data if not on wifi), because it wants a constant connection to dexcoms services, and this includes location data which requires use of the gps antenna, which is just a really stupid battery draining situation.

@confusedtorchic

well now i'm scared because Yellow above you stated it is likely a faulty battery and they had to replace it for the same exact issue. the phone is only a year and nearly 3 months old. i have it mostly in idle and depend on it for authy. the battery lasts quite awhile, just gives a different percentage when i reboot. a few high or few lower. then it always quickly drops off one percentage, then stabilizes as long as its on.

thank you, i truly hope its not that serious. the phone seems fine otherwise, just weird accuracies with the percentage.

tbf i just read that and assumed he was charging it

if it did just jump from 20 to 80 without charging, then that's definitely weird, yeah

had a post above this one, where in the OP i did state that i was charging it from 20 to 80. its never jumped such high percentages ever.

i found a post on google help where the person basically has had the same issue with all their android phones, including pixels. where upon restart the percent would go up or down a few higher or lower. i cant seem to find out more, maybe not typing it in right, as its hard to explain.

yeah from my experience pixel's can have weird glitches. updates fix somethings, and worsen others.

in modern times you do not want to let your battery drain to 0% pretty much ever. their capacity will shrink (by design) if you do. it should probably never be lower than about 10-15%, and if/when it is you should charge it immediately.

for example i'll shut off the phone and turn it back on it'll either be at a higher or lower percentage, but always quickly drops off one of those percentages whether lower or higher.
what precisely is the issue? you say that it's not accurate; how do you know that it's not accurate?

@Sahuagin

i know its not accurate because i saw the percentage before shutting it off. say it was 80, if it turn it back on it will say 82 or 83, or 78 or 77. sometimes it will swap to higher or lower if i restart again.

yeah it's an estimate not an exact number. it's based on voltage (?) or something like that, which will vary, especially if you reset the load by turning it off and on again.

(? I assume it's based on voltage and reading a bit about it, it sounds like it can be, but it's also probably more complicated than that.)

@sahuagin

so you don't think there's anything wrong? i'd be glad to get some relief over it and start tomorrow with a clearer head for sure.

i don't have an official wall charger for it, didn't come with one. i bought a $6 one from a local convenience store awhile back so it could support the official type c usb cable. i heard people say bad about convenience store wall chargers.

thinking back, before i was using an unofficial cable, belonged to my mom's vape, and it seemed to work better i think a long with the wall charger i was using for it. the cable had both types of usb so i was able to charge that way, cord was incredibly short though.

I'm not really an expert on electricity or batteries, but from the little I know I would actually expect the number to fluctuate a small amount and would be suspicious of it if it was too steady. it's an indication that you're measuring something real. it's not your HP in a game or something, it's like measuring the temperature or wind speed; there's a degree of inexactness involved.

on my pixel 6a i went into reset app preferences as i was trying to optimize the phone. and it restarted right after? is that normal? i seen a bunch of videos and they never rebooted. not sure if this was a bad idea? i read setting it on optimize can stabilize battery percentages. i just hope i didn't fuck up anything. i don't know what i was thinking. :'c
