Apparently there are some people speculating that he doesn't even know how to program or engineer stuff and that the people he hired are the ones doing all that?

If that's true, my question is how someone would even fucking know that without knowing him personally.

Anecdotes from people that have worked with him, evaluating stuff he's said to make inferences about how much he understands (for a concrete example of this happening with somebody else, Trump's question about injecting bleach to cure Covid suggests that he understands very little about medicine)... By and large, that's also just how corporations work: CEOs are not CEOs because they know anything about the work being done, they're CEOs because they know how to manage money.

ZayKayWill posted...
If he really was as stupid as people make him out to be, why not replace him with someone who could actually do the job better?

Because people actually working with him rarely have the authority to replace a CEO. If that's possible (depending on how he took ownership of the company, it may actually not be), that falls to the company's board of directors, and they tend to just look at the company's bottom line. They generally aren't connected enough with the frontline operations of the company to be able to assess whether the company's performance is because the CEO knows what he's doing or because the workers are able to produce a good return on investment despite that. Even when replacing the CEO is on the table, finding a new major investor isn't exactly the easiest thing to do, especially if a company is struggling and therefore not overly appealing as an investment (even if that struggle is entirely due to the incompetence of the CEO they're looking to replace).

There's a reason Twitter jumped at Musk's offer: The company was losing money, and the prospect of anyone buying such a struggling company for enough money for the owners to turn a meaningful profit on the whole ordeal was pretty much unfathomable. This is also why Musk tried to back out as soon as he realized he was in deep enough for it to have real consequences instead of just being a matter of showing off. Nobody with half a brain would have bought Twitter for $45 billion, so the fact that Musk offered was beyond Twitter's wildest dreams as far as exit strategies went. Musk, in turn, didn't actually plan to do it, but Twitter ended up with the legal upper hand and he was forced to go through with it.

Let me explain the amazing story of how Elon got rich...

Father owns an emerald mine lends him $1M
Elon becomes CEO of PayPal
Elon fired for incompetence from PayPal, keeps his shares and becomes rich
Elon invests in Tesla, watches Iron Man and goes "that me I the Iron Man" and hypes up/invlates his stock 50* over it's true valuation by promising 20 things that can never happen according to the laws of physics, and all the fans go "Man he's so smart, and he's so rich there's no way he's an idiot!" so they buy 20 TSLA shares on Robinhood.

He's the definition of failing up.

Oh, and they obviously can't fire him from Tesla. The second they do, the stock price will crash.

And who can blame the Elon haters when Elon fans have been putting out brainless shit like this for a decade?

I might actually consider it special in the sense that it's not very common (particularly *only* having two bachelors). Most people who get a bachelor degree either stop at one because going further won't help them, or they push for graduate studies because it's necessary to do so to move forward in their fields. But that's special in the statistical sense, not in terms of respect owed or anything like that.

People are bad at recognizing what has been termed 'Nobel Prize Effect' for a long time now. People who are intelligent in one field should not be assumed to be intelligent in other fields.

So you don't think successful business magnates can be hyper intelligent?
"Can be"? Sure - I never said they couldn't be hyper-intelligent, I said there's no correlation between high levels of intelligence and the ultra-wealthy (if I wanted to say that ultra-wealthy are seldom or never hyper-intelligent, I would have said those two traits are negatively correlated).

The traits generally correlated with billionaires are high starting wealth, high degrees of risk-tolerance, greed, and a certain level of narcissism and/or psychopathy. None of those require above-average intelligence.

OhhhJa posted...
It's a different type of intelligence from what it requires to be a scientist or academic, but I don't think it's fair to make the qualifier for not being intelligent "not being a scientist" lol
I'm referring to the general definition of intelligence, which is someone who can learn, understand, retain, and formulate complex concepts and ideas quickly.

I know much ink has been spilled in the last couple of decades about "different forms of intelligence"; bluntly, I don't know how much I agree with that movement, because a lot of it smacks of trying to shoehorn the phrase "intelligence" into various different definitions - of sometimes questionable veracity - as a balm to the ego of those who don't meet the "classical" definition of intelligence. That said, it's mostly an issue of semantics; I know multiple people who never finished high school but are master craftsmen who can make works of art with their hands (and everyone on the planet knows an athlete who is dumb as a brick but who earns more in a year than most of us will in a career for their talent at their sport of choice) - I generally call that "skill" rather than "intelligence", but it's different names for the same concept, so call it what you will.

OhhhJa posted...
That said I don't think high intellect is a very big factor in becoming a .001%. By far the most common denominator between the mega rich people is being born into generational wealth
And on that, we are absolutely in agreement.

ZayKayWill posted...
Apparently there are some people speculating that he doesn't even know how to program or engineer stuff and that the people he hired are the ones doing all that?

If that's true, my question is how someone would even fucking know that without knowing him personally.
Do you think no one knows Musk personally? The dude gets very involved in running his businesses. There are plenty of anecdotes about him from those who have worked with him that suggest he has no fucking clue what he's doing. To pick one example, one of the stories that came out of Tesla claimed that at least one of the workers had a "Musk script", which would just open up a window and spit out lines of fast-moving, meaningless text, Matrix-style, because Musk thought that was what coding was supposed to look like and he would get angry at people for "not working" if what they were doing didn't look like how he thought it should.

I can't personally speak to his competency when it comes to coding (because my own coding skill is extremely rudimentary, so I largely would have no idea as to whether his opinions are valid or not) or engineering (I am an engineer, but I've never heard any technical statements from Musk on engineering that I could evaluate, and even if I did, I'm not a mechanical/automotive engineer, so there's a good chance I wouldn't have the expertise to make a proper evaluation if he's talking about cars specifically), but others in those fields have pointed out issues with things that he's said that certainly makes me question his intelligence.

ZayKayWill posted...
If he really was as stupid as people make him out to be, why not replace him with someone who could actually do the job better?
And how would they do that?

Those who work for Musk don't have the capability to replace him, and those who could (i.e. shareholders at his publicly traded companies) would face an uphill battle (he owns a sizable chunk of stock in all of the companies he has that are publicly traded, which limits the capability of other shareholders to force him out by requiring their vote to be near-unanimous) and also largely don't care about his personal competency so long as he keeps making them money.

Notably, he did get fired from his first gig as a CEO - of Paypal - for what amounted to incompetence at running it as a proper business.

Racism and shit also has nothing much to do with intelligence unless you believe scientifically your race is superior. You can be smart and also a shitty person

Like I feel one can't honestly say Trump isn't a smart businessman. He's shitty and corrupt but he knows how to play the game so he gets away with it. He even brought it up in a debate with Hillary. Told her if she had a problem with the loopholes he exploited how come she never in all her political career tried to close those loopholes.

Like claiming bankruptcy is a tactic. Have a uncle that's done it 3 times. It makes you exempt on the taxes or something like that. Trump is just getting senile now and being president seems to have made him feel untouchable.

Trump is a billionaire because he was given what a million by his dad and he made smart enough decisions to make that money grow. He'd probably flunk a science test but at least before he got senile he knew business and how he could manipulate the laws to his benefit.

Actually, a few different people had done the math, and even before all these gajillion-dollar fines his net worth would have been significantly greater if he'd just left the money in trust. The investment decisions he's made haven't been entirely without returns, but on the whole he's lost money compared to what he would have if he'd done nothing.
