If you live in an abandoned property for a determinant amount of time, then you now have title to the property (there are other elements to that of course but thats the gist of it). This exists to stop landlords from leaving property abandoned and in disrepair which would hurt property values. If the property is truly abandoned, then the squatter can take ownership over it after a period of time set out by the state government.
