Lmfao, not going to lie as someone that hasn't really watched much wrasttlin' since around 2005 this is the kind of goofiness I actually miss.

as a wrestling outsider i recently had the pleasure? honor? of watching WCW's Bash at the Beach 2000 with some folks this last week. i don't know if i'm going to become super wrestling pilled but i'll watch it sometimes.

alright, that was kinda fun... I remember seeing a few episodes (sorry, I know, don't know the term) back in 2002 and finding them cheesily enjoyable, but also kind of having that teen "I'm too cool for stuff I find kinda cringely stupid" feeling

Personally, I won't return to wrestling when Raw is three hours and WrestleMania is two nights. That's too much time to devote to one medium. There's supposed to be one weekend out of the year where I do nothing but watch wrestling? And I'm supposed to watch five full hours -- plus optional additional wrestling content -- every week?

That's too much.

The Rock's entrance earlier in the night is awesome.

He really is the final boss to beat.

Nah he's a good face too, but I hear being a heel is easier.

Plus, after a few years of being a good heel, a lot of times they turn face because the fans turn them.

When did wrestlers started back bleeding?

I haven't watched wrestling since the Attitude era, but if they're really going away from the PG bullshit, and Vince is gone, I might give it a look again.

I watched it and also the segment where Punk ran down Drew and Seth. Both were great.
I'm now wondering if I picked bad time to stop watching.

In its day, it was the worst "dream" match. It's since been surpassed. But Rock vs Goldberg from Backlash 2003. (Author's Note: This is my opinion, not objective fact.)

It was 13 minute match with maybe 8 minutes of wrestling. Every time Rock got hit, he would roll out of the ring and stall for time. It might have been that way because there were concerns about Goldberg's cardio. It might have been done that way because Goldberg wanted to be booked to look like he was 5 times as strong as the Great One and Rock couldn't withstand more than a single move at a time. I don't know. The match was crap, but they managed to get to the double digits.

Maybe that'll happen here. Maybe Cody Rhodes will kick The Rock and he'll roll outside of the ring and stall for time before getting back in. And drinking bottles of water during matches was part of Rock's character previously. We could see that become a matter of necessity. Aging happens to everyone. Even Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

In a way this Rock is more similar to his Babyface persona back in the day anyway. His character was a cocky asshole who thought he was better than everyone but also knew how to back that up and liked to fight.

This Final Boss persona is a clever evolution of that character. He's no longer the scrappy smartass. He's a rich businessman. He's a movie star. He's on the board of the company. He is now built like a tank. He's still overall bigger and more popular than anyone else in the company since his peak. He's related to the heel faction that the current face is running against. But he's still an asshole.

It all works pretty well. He could transition to a face whenever though. Like it's The Rock. Even if he's the villain people are going to cheer when his music hits.

If anything I think this loud mouth persona is what his movies often lack. So many of his roles are just buff nice guy heroes. The Rock is at his best when he is insulting and demeaning the people around him whether he was a face or heel. But I get that he has a brand that he wants to sell.

The "PG Era" only really lasted a few years. They still have the rating, but they swear and bleed every once in awhile. They're not as strict as they were early on, where you couldn't even say "damn", and stopped matches any time someone had minor bleeding.
