They really do need another female lead already. 16 main games in, and only 1 has a single indisputable female lead (though two of VI's major protagonists are women, and tbh XII is really more about Ashe than Vaan).

I don't care either way if she's gay or not (chances are, she would absolutely not be), but as long as it's a girl, I'm good. Clive ended up being a good character, but I was really disappointed when they revealed him as the lead.

Luckily Final Fantasy 13 came out before the whole Anti-SJW craze. Sure it's a bad game but people hate it for the right reasons. If it came out now people would ignore the flaws in the game play and just focus on the gender of the main character.

I love me some gay girls innit. But FF is a Japanese franchise, and it's way too mainstream to go gay. I don't think even Gust or Idea Factory go beyond yuri subtext in their games, and they'd go super hard gay long before FF would even consider a lesbian main couple.

Guessing because they thought a guy doing the kinds of shit Shirley does would be seen as very offensive.

I mean, 16 had Dion. He wasn't the main character, but him being gay was very front and center, and he was one of the best characters in the game.

Another idea is if they added elements of western rpgs and let you control the romances. Imagine if you could pick and choose who gets with who amongst your party. Throughout the game there would be many moments where you get to make a story choice that changes character relationships. And it would possible to create any romance combo you want. Would add a lot of replay value
