I've done this style of poll contest once before, back in either Gen VII or Gen VIII, so why not try it again now? The rules are simple: each day, I'm going to post a poll for a given Pokemon typing, with each generation's roster of new Pokemon filling in that typing. You just need to look at what each generation had to offer, and select which generation you think brought the best new roster (for any reason; you could say that a single Pokemon was so good that it overwhelms everything else the generation spawned, or you could select a generation that may be more well-rounded that the one that created your personal favorite). At the end of the day, one generation will be crowned a champion (with potential tiebreakers if need be), and that generation will advance to a second round, where the eighteen winners, and fourteen strongest runner-ups will be sorted into a 32-entrant tournament to crown which generation produced the best overall roster of a single typing.

Ground gave us a tie for the fewest votes in a given round (with Flying, not long ago). But still, there was a clear winner in Gen I and two solid runners-up in Gens III & V. Really though, the big highlight of the Ground-type is that this was the first day in which THREE generations got completely shut out. Not a single vote was cast for any of Gens VII, VIII, or IX, which is probably what allowed such strong performances from the top three from this round.

For today's contest, we're doing Ice-types. Ice has gotten the short end of the stick for a typing that should be a lot more fun and interesting than it is. Ice somehow has become the rarest typing in Pokemon, despite having a decent head start over Dragon and Ghost due to their first two generations, and Fairy coming in six generations late. Will this translate to more low votals, or will Ice surprise today? Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. I'll keep the same concept for later typings as well. Note: I will not be considering things like Dialga/Palkia's form changes in Gen VIII, as those are still technically the same in the way Giratina's form change was back in Gen IV.

Fire: Gen I (30 Votes, 47.62%)
Bug: Gen V (30 Votes, 44.12%)
Dragon Gen III (30 Votes, 41.67%)
Grass: Gen III (28 Votes, 45.90%)
Fairy: Gen VII (24 Votes, 39.34%)
Electric: Gen I (24 Votes, 37.50%)
Flying: Gen I (21 Votes, 35.00%)
Ground: Gen I (20 Votes, 33.33%)
Dark: Gen II (18 Votes, 26.87%)
Fighting: Gen IV (14 Votes, 21.88%)
Ghost: Gen V (13 Votes, 17.81%)

(Dark: Gen IX - 17 Votes, 25.37%)

It's funny, I usually consider this one of my more liked types when generalizing, but when it's laid out like this, every gen has something that I don't like counterbalancing the good ones. Not immediately sure which one to vote for.

Gen V (Absolutely terrible. Kyurem is one of the worst Pokemon of all time, and everything else is a generic monotype that didn't need to be. I like Beartic, but come ON with this shit.)

Gen III (Spheal and cute and Regice is cool as far as the Regis go, but Snorunt, Glalie and Sealeo aren't worth it, and Walrein has the same problem as a lot of Gen I's Water/Ice-types in that it doesn't feel like an Ice-type so much as a Water-type.)

Gen II (I like Swinub and Sneasel...but they evolve into something better. And I don't hate Smoochum...but Delibird and Piloswine aren't great.)

Gen VI (Amaura/Aurorus being amazing single-handedly drag Gen VI this high...but it's still not great. Bergmite/Avalugg have the same problem as pretty much all of Gen V, and Mega Glalie just makes one of the worst Megas.)

Gen VIII (I can't believe we got the biggest roster of Ice-types in Gen VIII and it still manages to be mediocre. Mr. Rime is fine. Darmanitan is fine (Darumaka is NOT). Frosmoth is solid (Snom is just a funny design and nothing else.) But then Eiscue and the fossils are lame, and Hisuian Avalugg is the WORST regional form we've seen since the concept's introduction. And Glastrier pales in comparison to Spectrier.)

Gen IX (This is fine. Cetoddle/Cetitan are decent for monotypes, and the Baxcalibur line, Chien-Pao and Iron Bundle are okay. But this just doesn't hit any real HIGHS for me.)

Gen I (It has some stuff I really like (Dewgong/Articuno), some stuff I think is overrated (Cloyster/Lapras), and something overhated but not great (Jynx). But this is such a bizarre generation because 60% of the field is mixed with Water-types and their Ice-halves aren't really what they stand out for.)

Gen VII (There really isn't a dud in the bunch, but it's hard to give full praise when 80% of the field is just regional forms of already great Pokemon. I love Alolan Ninetales...but this is just Ninetales again, who is already great. Crabominable, while good to have as a Fighting-type...it's one of the worst Fighting/??? type combos to me.

Gen IV (Going into today, I immediately assumed my vote would be going to Gen IV. Weavile/Glaceon/Mamoswine are all top fifty Pokemon, Froslass and Abomasnow's lines are unique type combos that make them stand out even if they're not high favorites...and I forgot about Rotom Frost as well. There's not a dud in the bunch with this group.)

Yeah these are... not great. I know it's not gen 5 or 6 but the rest are sorta close.

I think I'm just gonna vote gen 3 for Spheal

2 and 9 are out due to the original sin of Delibird and its paradox. 7 likewise for Crabominable and un-sanding the Sandshrew line. 6 is out because its lone mega showing is somehow terrible despite looking badass, and also because the fossil and the Bergmite line are the biggest whatever. 3 is out because I feel nothing but antipathy for its showing. 1 is out because Cloyster and Lapras dont make up for the meh otherwise.

This leaves me a tossup between Sinnoh, Unova, and Galar (I actually like the Vanillish line). Ultimately it comes down to which I've used on a team, so Sinnoh is out, since I've used Cryogonal and Eiscue both. Then it comes to what I dislike less between Beartic and Galarian Darmanitan, and thus Galar wins for me.

All hail Snom.

Edit: and then I forgot Mamoswine not even a day later. Welp. Still 50 50 between Sinnoh and Galar.

god i like ice types

gen 1: i like dewgong, but walrein was kinda just an improved version of em. big cloyster fan. sadly neutral on jynx and (controversial opinion alert) also lapras. articuno is a good legendary, not the best on this list but solid)
gen 2: middling lineup, i like piloswine and sneasel, but not as much as mamo or weavile
gen 3: i am the biggest fan of snowy castform probably on the internet since there are no snowy castform fans on the internet. i also love snorunt, think glalie is good, spheal is a good bean and the rest of the line is legit as heck, and regice is my favourite ice legendary. gen 3 packing heat (or a lack thereof) here for sure
gen 4: yeah i've probably said enough about these at this point for it to probably not be a big surprise if i just said that i think all of these actually rule besides rotom frost
gen 5: ice cream mon is GOOD. beartic is legit (neutral on cubchoo). cryogonal is a top 3 fav ice type. it's a shame i just really don't like kyurem in a vacuum let alone in terms of its role in the plot)
gen 6: glalie getting a mega form over every other reasonable option up to that point is still one of the more eye-raising decisions gamefreak has made imo. maybe it's because it was on the same stat spread as rotom and phione that they took any notice, idk. aurorus and avalugg lines are fine. rather decent gen for the type even if it feels lacking in volume
gen 7: alolan ice variants are good but also i don't like them more than the ogs. crabominable is just bad
gen 8: mr rime is nice though it represents a trend i didn't like about gen 8 in only regional variants getting evolutions... game freak please stop doing this. and (warning another controversial opinion) i don't like galarian fire monkey takes. snom/frosmoth i do like, eiscue i do not. glastrier underrappreciated both without and also with rider, and i won't talk about gen 8 fossils
gen 9: iron bundle is probably the only one i'd "like" here but it just makes me sad about the state of delibird (and it's busted statwise). i'd like chien-pao too but it's just a problematic mon also (even factoring in the fact that it's been nerfed)

Man, I like the idea of Ice type but not the execution. Ummm

9. Gen VIII - Snom/Frosmoth and Darmanitan are good but everything else sucks and the fossils are so bad they drag it down to last place. Mr. Rime is terrible too.

8. Gen VI - Auorus line is solid but gets outshine by the much superior Tyrantrum line. Everything else is bad.

7. Gen VII - The only original Pokemon here is one of the worst Pokemon of all time, which sucks because these are some of the best regional forms.

6. Gen V - I'm on of the biggest fans of the ice cream line around, and Cubchoo is adorable, but the rest are pretty meh.

5. Gen II - I like the Piloswine line and Sneasel, but they both get improved on later. Delibird is great and Smoochum kind of sucks.

4. Gen I - Dewgong is one of the most forgettable Gen 1 Pokemon, and I've never liked Jynx. I like Articuno in general, but it's solidly my least favorite of the trio. Cloyster and Lapras are pretty good as well, but not among my favorites. As usual, Gen 1 is very solid.

3. Gen IV - Abomasnow sucks and Froslass isn't my cup of tea, but Weavile, Mamoswine, and Glaceon is a very good top 3.

2. Gen IX - There's nothing here I dislike. Love Cetoddle, the Artibax line is great, Chien Pao is cool, and Iron Bundle is one of the better Paradox Pokemon.

1. Gen III - Ironically, my favorite Pokemon is actually Ice-type. Spheal is such an adorable ball of joy and really carries this generation pretty hard. I do like Castform and the Glalie line though, and Regice is my favorite Regi... even if I don't really like any of them that much. Walrein is a disgrace, but Sealeo is at least decent. In the end, not the strongest lineup but no other generation was good enough to beat out a group with Spheal in it.

My initial instinct is to auto-vote III for Glalie, but I don't actually care about anything else from it, so I didn't vote.

IV makes a strong case with Froslass, Weavile, and Mamoswine.

I is a decent start with Articuno and Cloyster, and Lapras is fine too.

II's got nothing for me.

V is all good minus Vanillish, but the highs aren't very high.

VI has Mega Glalie and Aurorus is nice, but not great.

VII has the top tier Alolan Sandslash, and A-Ninetales is also better than regular.

VIII is honestly great with its ability to have a full team of six different Ice types. Frosmoth, Glastrier, and Galarian Darmanitan are all great, and I like Arctozolt and Mr. Rime well enough too. This one ultimately gets my vote over IV.

IX also is all good ones, but like V, the highs mostly aren't super high. I love Cetoddle, but I've kinda cooled on Cetitan over time. Frigibax line is all good, and it was really cool to have a nice Ice-type pseudo.

I think: VIII > IX > IV > VII > III > V > VI > I > II
