i just got to the robot NPCs. i was hoping for like, a chill, no-narrative exploring a city vibes game. im sadly not into this post apocalyptic robot society and mutant bugs thing.

u get a plate of meatballs, then u bite into one only to realize theyre veggie balls. Now, u like veggie balls, but ur tastes were calibrated as if u were about to eat meatballs, so u are naturally taken aback at the jarring difference between implicit expectation, and reality

u dont dislike veggie balls. its just not what you thought u were getting

you can do a little bit of exploring in the... three(?) city hub areas

but yeah its mostly a platformer sorry bro

While I get this, I'm not sure Stray was literally ever advertised as a "no narrative" game, so I'm not sure where TC would have drawn such a conclusion. Literally the first trailer of Stray showed the robots.

i really didn't like the robot people angle either. i thought it was going to be more about visual storytelling and a clever means to facilitate platforming gameplay. like Unravel. that game's awesome

I mean, I've made mistakes, too, but I didn't then make a topic going "X game wasn't what I thought it'd be" when I, admittedly, literally have no idea what the game even was.

I guess what confused me is the TC came off like the robots/etc. being in the game are some kind of surprise, when... No, literally the first trailer showed them.

Dungeater is awesome imo, and definitely wouldnt abandon that poor kitty who is trapped alone in a town of cold unfeeling robots. When all that poor scared kitty wants to do is get back to its kitty family that it loves. Especially when the game can be beaten in less than 3 hours.

Stray made me feel super fucking depressed when playing it. One of the few games I had to just put down and not touch again.

DS2 is another good example, yeah. For some reason, that one made me feel even worse than DS3.

And it's a very charming and fun game. With less reading in the whole game than you do before you leave Pallet Town in Pokemon RBY.

damn i really thought the food metaphor was on point

if i had known what kind of game it was prior, i may well have enjoyed it a lot more. but since my expectations and reality were at odds, i found it jarring and off-putting

i do not have a problem with the concept of reading. many CRPGs are among my favorite games of all time, as well as several japanese-spoken (english sub) games

like what am i missing, how are these people not getting it?

I think this is literally the disconnect. The game was very up front about what it was. To be unaware of what it was would require avoiding literally all media about it whatsoever, which... To your credit, you admit you did. But the disconnect is in... Okay, you avoided all media, but avoiding all media is literally why you had different expectations, so I think some of us are confused what you're trying to say.
