I've heard much, much better guitar work in this kind of song, the singer has a nice voice but sounds a bit bored and isn't putting in the emotion she should, and even the flamenco clapping is weirdly muted. Also isn't Suikoden set during the Romance of the Three Kingdoms or something? Very memorable melody that lacks proper support. UF8 leads me to believe I should play this game, so I've held off listening to the soundtrack. I love how earnest Koyama's music sounds. As somebody who doesn't know Klonoa music well, kind of reminds me of Klonoa music. This is doing very nice old school RTS music things. And also Amiga things. Those are good things to be doing! It's going for kind of a unique vibe, and doesn't really place nicely in any easy to define category. It's not weird enough to get my prog hackles to rise, not exciting enough to get my blood pounding, not calm enough to get my breathing to slow, not dreamy enough to take my mind to a faraway place. Great buildup, and especially great that after the tension reached the first climax, it kind of faded away without some kind of drop that wouldn't really fit the song, which made the sustain of the second that much more powerful. Very interesting construction, and lots of great parts scattered throughout. The mixing is a bit messy towards the end when it's louder, but the tradeoff is worth it. I listened to this almost exactly a year ago for some reason. Where even to begin. The gibberish "conlang" is super distinctive and fits the song well, the erhu slays, the goofy-ass English lyrics are surprisingly powerful, the song has the sense of *stakes* that I love, and every part seems intent on making the most over-the-top dramatic soundscape possible, from the boundground choir to the shredding violin to the goddamn pre-chorus *harp*.
