Many considered this the weakest AAI2 case...and it still gets above a 5.0! The pacing is the huge killer here, with mostly everyone citing this to be the issue. Some of the characters were not entirely compelling either. On the other hand, mostly everyone liked the prison setting and the general conceit of the case.

Summary:

Eighteen years ago, Gregory Edgeworth took a case that would become the final case of his career. At the request of his father's former colleague and friend, Edgeworth rises to the challenge of solving the mystery that marred Manfred von Karma's perfect record, and cost his father his life.

Main Characters: Miles Edgeworth, Dick Gumshoe, Kay Faraday, Gregory Edgeworth, Raymond Shields, Tyrell Badd, Justine Courtney, Sebastian Debeste, Manfred von Karma
Other Characters: Jeffrey Master, Katherine Hall, Delicia Scones, Dane Gustavia, Larry Butz, Pierre Hoquet, Isaac Dover

My rating: 9.5/10. This is a contender for most epic and dramatic non-finale case in the entire series. Shields was fine in E2-2 but he really earned his mark here as Gregory's assistant. Playing as Gregory rules and I love the film noir design they gave him. Having one of the most influential background cases become reality and having it take place in a national dessert contest is wild and I feel like only Ace Attorney has the chutzpah to pull off. A case that switches between the past and the present is already a really cool idea and the pacing, while rough at times, feels decidedly earned. The cast is top notch too: Jeffrey and Katherine are both really compelling and sympathetic characters, Larry is a little less in the forefront which works for him, Gustavia's a giant question mark until he reveals himself to be an asshole, and Delicia is the rare quirky Ace Attorney witness that just works.

If there is one AAI case everyone needs to play/watch, this is the one. You really don't need the context of the prior cases to enjoy this one.

I went back and forth on giving this an 8 or a 9 because it does still have some AAI pacing issues but I'll go ahead and make this my lowest 9/10 because I feel like throwing AAI2 a bone here - it still doesn't stack up to the best traditional AA cases for me but it's exciting, memorable, and makes me fully give a shit! The whole past/future dynamic works pretty well here and even though the murder is like, completely insane and involves a completely ludicrous scenario, I can somehow buy it. The cast is really good in this one. This is definitely peak AAI.

My favorite non-finale case! I was the one person asking for a playable Gregory case, so it gets major points for that alone. There's just so much emotion packed into this one with the connection between the past and the present. The moment Master finally gets to go free is super poignant.

Gustavia is a great villain (and it's a strong cast overall), and there's a bittersweet element in the resolution because the loophole that enabled them to finally catch him is also what will let him go free in the end. I appreciated them letting Ray have the final word because this case was his as much as it was the Edgeworths'.

I've played through it and watched someone else play through it twice, and I still don't understand various key aspects of how the case played out and why certain things happened. Is this the most complicated murder in the series? I'd cast my vote for it.

Despite that, and the fact that it's like 14 hours long, I'm still gonna give it a really good score because all the world-building and character development and foreshadowing is incredible.

Let's say.... a 9.0/10

Kind of makes AAI 2 worth playing but like every case in this game it's a bit drawn out.

Every time I play 1-4 now, I remind myself that the first time Gregory Edgeworth met the man who would eventually kill him, he was walking out of a giant dessert castle

Also, Delicia was probably present at DL-6

It's good, but it's kinda not really what I want from a third case. It's kind of like a final case in terms of scope and length. TBH it kinda lost me in the middle.

10/10

It's genuinely better than entire games in this series, and it pulls off a past/present connection wonderfully unlike the disaster that was 4-4's MASON system. Gregory and von Karma make excellent rivals, Katherine Hall is lovely, and being able to see the events that practically started the whole series had me stand up and take a break from playing when it was pieced together. Really! Gustavia makes a suitable villain when revealed, and the set pieces of the gallery are striking. von Karma's penalty delivery even sets up for the next case on top of explaining an intriguing piece of information from the very first game. I guess if there's a negative to be had, Butz being involved in the case was something I sighed at.

I debated giving this case the highest score, but it really is that good for me. I can only offer nitpicks for criticisms. The team deserves a round of applause for delivering this as "only" the third case of the game. Easy top 5 case for the series imo.

9, might be a little high but it's just really enjoyable all around. like 6-3 it's kind of an epic case in the middle of the game.

I would not consider 6-3 an epic case. E2-3 is the closest a non-finale case gets to feeling like one.

I like 6-3 but the only thing reminiscent of a finale is how the first trial day ends. And really that only applies to a specific moment from one finale.

I tend to group the Case 3s into two categories: "filler case regarding a quirky topic" and "long case that builds up to finale". 6-3 falls into the second one, but I wouldn't necessarily call it epic. That said, this case and another game's Case 3 fall into that second one and I would call them epic cases.
