https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/39962406/nba-bans-raptors-jontay-porter-gambling-violations

Porter, the league said, gave a bettor information about his own health status before Toronto's game on March 20. The league said another individual, known to be an NBA bettor, placed an $80,000 bet that Porter would not hit the numbers set for him in parlays through an online sportsbook. That bet would have won $1.1 million.

Porter took himself out of that game after only a few minutes, claiming illness, with none of his stats meeting the totals set in the parlay. The bet was frozen and not paid out, and the NBA started an investigation.

The NBA's investigation found the Porter placed at least 13 bets on NBA games using an associate's account, with the bets ranging from $15 to $22,000, totaling $54,094. The NBA said the total payout from those bets was $76,059, a net winnings of $21,965. None of Porter's bets involved games in which he played. Three of his bets were multigame parlays that included one Raptors contest -- and Porter bet that the Raptors would lose. All three bets lost, the NBA said.

The only bet athletes should be allowed to make is on their own team, specifically they should only be allowed to bet that they're going to win.

If every bet they make is that they're going to kick ass and be the best? I don't have a problem with it.

No. No athletes should be able to bet on anything in their sport. It is in their contract, and needs to be enforced to ensure the integrity of the game. Refs obviously should never be able to bet, neither should players or coaches. I personally think if you work for a team you it should be in your contract you cant bet on that sport.

Can you find any exploit in being allowed to bet that your team is going to win?

I honestly don't even see how there would be an exploit if they would or wouldn't bet the same every game.

Its not a matter of what is or isnt going to exploit, its a matter of.. they just shouldnt be betting. Its not like this is some god given right, its not taking away their freedom.

I could not care less if players bet on games that their team is not involved in

So stupid to bet on himself and in a negative way.

Ideally, I think players should not make bets, especially in their sport, but some exceptions can be made.

- Any game where player/team is not involved in
- Team to win
- Any over bet for anyone's individual stat on the team with a parley of the team winning

I feel that any other bets involving players on the team could be skewed due to insider knowledge. It would be equally be as bad if he made the same bet he did but on a teammate because of knowledge. Also any over bets without the team winning could encourage more selfish behavior that might be detrimental.

Simple. Play less hard in games you don't bet on to save energy for games you do bet on.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

Games tend to be spread out enough that that's not an issue. Pretty rare to play multiple games in a single day.

Load management is a major thing in the NBA, and players often play three or even more games a week. There absolutely is a benefit to resting some days, both officially and unofficially, and going all out one day could easily have a deleterious impact on your play a couple days later.

Porter was a bench player, but for starters major minutes for 82 games a year takes a big toll on your body, and that's not even accounting for deep playoff runs potentially pushing that number over a hundred games played.

Also consider that athletes are privy to information the public is not, and using that info, even to bet on your own team's success, really calls into question the legitimacy and fairness the whole gambling pyramid is built on. It's like insider trading.

Yep...Especially after Tim Donahue, this and the fact he bet on his own team make this a certain death penalty.

The only other active player that is currently blacklisted from the NBA for life is OJ Mayo btw. You have to go back to the 90s for any other player who is permendantly banned.
