It's definitely not a mere photoshop, I can tell you that. Those two example images show all of the hallmarks of out-of-the-box body morphs with auto-adjusted clothing morphs and no effort to change the pose that no longer fits with her body type (e.g. there is no longer any collision between her left fist and her hip)

If it is a prank, then it was done either via a custom (or cracked) mod or the 3D figures were pirated and loaded into Blender or some other 3D program and then toyed around with. And the latter requires a shitload of work (you have to export the 3D figures, import them into the desired 3D program, and then somehow restore the rigging *morphs, poses, magnets, joints, etc.*)
That is, unless the piraters have created some sort of special 3D software like the ol' XNLara that can import 3D figures from any game that uses the same gaming engine that Pokemon Go uses.

I hope my explanation in this post about 3D software and figures isn't too confusing for people (let me know if it is)

I really hope this either gets a massive overhaul or such a backlash they revert it back.

It's clear that they're going for a more realistic and less anime-like aesthetic when you look at both her and the male's faces (e.g. their lips, the lack of sharpness of the after-pic boy's chin, the removal of his spiky hair), but they simply used generic body/bodypart morphs that simply do not look good because they were obviously designed to portray completely different properties. In the instance of her abdomen, it's painfully clear that they scaled up the "child" morph for that area of her body, but not for her chest. For her breasts, they either scaled up an elderly morph or they jacked up the "female breast, lower, move up/down" morph beyond the intended parameters.

In order to make the clothing not look like crap, they would need to manually create new adjustment morphs specifically for that new custom bodytype. And really, they need to create entirely new body morphs if they want to change the characters from having a stylized hourglass figure to something more realistic for an Asian woman's bodytype.

When actually, the bulk of complainers online seems to be women players. Not to mention the male avatars are equally as fucked up now

I went over to RE and checked and I am seeing basically universal hate for how the characters look. The only apologia I see is that this will be used by people as an example of desexualization of games being bad. Some seem to be concerned about the shittiness of these characters being weaponized against desexualization in general, but I haven't seen anyone actually say they like the update.

All genders have the same "chest" slider as one of the customization options, but even when it's set to zero, my male avatar looks like he's got more than pecs. "Shoulders" and "waist" are other options, but you can't really configure them to get a masculine frame. At max, the shoulders are still narrow, and the hips are sizeable even at a low setting. You're basically locked in to having certain feminine proportions.

For me, it's just kind of funky. I'm not too attached to Pokemon and I've only been playing this game a few months. But some people have been playing for years and really relate to their avatars. I could see this update causing real body-image issues.

Apparently you can adjust a lot of stuff through sliders, but it still looks uncanny

I tried to make my character built like a weight lifter, but the chest slider only seems to give him man boobs instead of pecks. I lift 5 days a week so I guess my body type just isn't allowed? Now I know how pretty women feel when trying to create themselves in modern games lol. Sucks

With a hoodie on you can slide the muscles up, and shoulders up, weight in the middle, chest in the middle, hips one notch above middle. Not the best but adds some bulk.

Daz Studio tried something similar 10 years ago, and the clothing tended to have the exact same deformities in the chest and tanktop strap areas (This is also a common problem in general if you try to autofit clothing designed for a female character to a male one)
Ultimately, content creators complained that rigging the clothing was too much of a pain in the ass, so Daz split the next generation model into male and female figures again.

For some reason, the creators of Pokemon Go have decided to repeat the same mistake, but with even worse-looking results, and a substantially greater loss in profits (There were plenty of customers who liked the unisex figure, and Daz still had its Generation 4 figures to fall back upon)

Also, for anyone not familiar with 3D modeling lingo, pokethrough is when covered parts of the character's skin stick out through their clothes (or in other situations, one piece of clothing, like say-- a shirt-- pokes through part of another piece, like say, a jacket)

Damn.

The only time I remember them listening to the fans is when they increased the pokestop spin radius during covid, then reverted it back soon after. Everyone was outraged so they increased the radius back again, but were very passive aggressive about how they announced they were reverting it

I think it's one thing for a Japanese dev studio to be very insular, like Nintendo or something. But western studios like Niantic can't really get away with that imo. There's a reason every single other game they've made has failed. They are bad game developers who make bad business decisions and ignore their playerbase's wishes

If they didn't luck into literally the largest media franchise in the world, they would have gone out of business years ago since nobody gives a shit about augmented reality anymore. I really wish The Pokemon Company would pull the license and give the game to a better developer. It could be a much higher quality product that makes more money and is more player-friendly

Not necessarily, Nintendo itself has multiple smartphone games that are much more player-friendly AND are much less aggressive with the monetization
