When has the right ever not owned religion?

There's been many times when religion has been associated with radical reformist and even revolutionary left wing or at least populist movements. For example, the Progressive era was heavily associated with dominant strains of protestant Christianity. Before that, many peasant rebellions in Europe were inspired by a Christian socialist tradition.

The almost total capture of the "Christian" identity and political expression by the right is largely a 20th century thing.

Pre-Reagan. Barry Goldwater, a prominent Republican who ran against LBJ in the 60s, would eventually support gay rights, abortion, environmental protections, and legalized marijuana. He saw the rise of the religious right coming and said...

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."

Fast forward 16 years and you get Ronald Reagan and the "moral majority" allying, and this country's never been the same.

There was plenty of religious right-wing crap in our country before the 1900s, as well. And outside of our own country, religious right-wing type stuff has been a pretty big constant in a lot of countries in the last 2000 years.

I've asked you about it like twice lmao, and haven't been modded.

Don't say shit if you can't back it up. You're the one who posted the random bullshit and then fled the topic. It's not really weird that people happen to remember the dumb shit you've posted.

Hell, the Puritans who settled in what became the US were kicked out of the UK for being too right-wing (or the equivalent of such a thing back then).

Haven't watched yet but will say this is a better tactic for atheists to acknowledge Christianity actually teaches people to be good and preach that the Christianity they dislike is perverted form of it. It is also easy to do since Jesus main thing is to love your neighbor, help the poor etc.

I'm not sure what you call that time in Europe where Catholicism brutally suppressed practically everyone and freedom of expression then.

America was founded by right wing religious nuts who found the already religiously right wing countries of europe too lax.

Oh, I know the reason. Just more a general statement that the party of "good Christian values, " and the people they appeal to, always seem to actively despise the very values of the person their claimed faith is named for.

On the same topic, I plan on watching this documentary this weekend.

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2024/apr/27/bad-faith-documentary-christian-nationalism

By looking back on the half-century of Christian nationalist belief, organizing and action, the events of January 6 no longer seemed shocking, but the logical endpoint of anti-democratic ideals. It was unmistakable, once you looked in the right place and you listened to what people were saying, and you understood how to decode what they were saying, said Ujlaki. Little would you know that when they talk about recreating the kingdom of God on earth, they werent talking about something spiritual. They were talking about demolishing democracy so that God, ie themselves, could rule."

Ultimately why religion should be ditched and replaced with humanism. At best its a waste of time, at worst we get theocracy.

The why seems obvious. Massive numbers of people who have been heavily indoctrinated since birth to think and act as they are told. Most have show they are fine with bullshit that doesn't make any real sense or have any sort of proof as long as their pastor says that it's true.
