The Biden administration said Friday that it was reasonable to assess that Israel has violated international law in Gaza, but that it hasn't violated terms of U.S. weapons agreements.

In a report to Congress, the State Department said it hasnt verified specific instances that would justify withholding military aid.

While the U.S. has had deep concerns during the period since October 7 about action and inaction by Israel that contributed significantly to a lack of sustained and predictable delivery of needed assistance at scale, and the overall level reaching Palestinian civilians while improved remains insufficient, we do not currently assess that the Israeli government is prohibiting or otherwise restricting the transport or delivery of U.S. humanitarian assistance" under the Foreign Assistance Act, the report said.

The report also said that Israel has "the knowledge, experience, and tools to implement best practices for mitigating civilian harm in its military operations," but noted that results in the field, "including high levels of civilian casualties, raise substantial questions" about whether the Israel Defense Forces are "using them effectively in all cases."

The report also pointed to limitations as far as U.S. access to information from Israel. While Israel provided some information "on request" about specific incidents related to targeting decisions and battled damage assessments, more details are needed, the report said.

Read the act again, then read a goddamn newspaper. We have one of the most sophisticated intelligence gathering apparatuses in the world, if not the most.

It's absurd to think they could assess something so badly and in contradiction to reality as a matter of the system making that conclusion.

If our allies, and allegedly one of our closest and most stalwart allies, is unwilling to share accurate intelligence gathered from the field, why is no one asking whether or not they're still our stalwart ally?

Iran was sharing more details with us before Trump ripped up the nuclear deal than we're getting from Israel about their operations... and somehow our state dept is hunkey dorey with that? What the actual fuck is our government at this point?

Could be related to that report from 2 months ago that showed that the health ministry numbers being reported were statistically impossible, not representative of the population distribution, and seemingly completely disconnected from events on the ground:

The change was for deaths identified. They also didn't previously show the number of men identified.It's not immediately clear to me the standard they're using for "identified", the age cutoff or whether men and women above a certain age are counted singularly as "elderly".

Extrapolating the proportions to the remaining 10k confirmed deaths and taking the 10k "under the rubble or otherwise missing" as deaths at face value (given these numbers are probably conservative due to the difficulties of tracking and reporting amid the mass destruction): that would be an additional 6,400 unidentified kids and 4,000 women.

So about 9k women and 14,400 children, which gets us roughly to the numbers before the reporting change. Given how well this napkin math works out, I expect this is in fact what changed in the reporting. Still I don't see an explanation on the UN page at the moment.

That's all to say, it doesn't appear that the UN has done anything to doubt or discredit the Gaza MoH numbers, instead they stopped reporting the total estimates and changed it to absolute confirmed identity deaths.

I'm only finding reporting from right wing outlets that are using the wording to suggest the total death count was reduced by the UN. It honestly looks like partisan opportunism, though the UN could probably have dampened those headlines if it gave more information up front about the reporting change.

From what l can see, the Gaza officially stopped reporting how many of the dead that were kids/women a while ago, and the new numbers are lower.
The total killed are around the same, just more dead adult males.
So it can be everything from correcting wrong numbers to propaganda (both before with how many innocent that died to after with how many "Hamas" that have been killed).

"Don't hate civilians" is meant in the sense of don't just start blaming / taking it out on random Israeli people who aren't supporting or contributing to the genocide efforts. You can absolutely blame individuals who *are* participating or supporting it, even if they're not actual IDF members.

True. Obviously I don't mean Israeli citizens in Israel who are protesting against this ethnic cleansing and calling for the removal of Netanyahu. But it's hard to feel like any Settler in the West Bank is a decent person as they all likely support it on some level as they all benefit/participate in what's happening, even if they're not one of the people sabotaging this food supply.

I think back to a story someone posted of a woman's mother who survived the Holocaust, made it to Israel, and they wanted to give her a free house in the WB. She talks about how the food the family made for dinner was literally still warm and on the table, and when she realized what was happening she refused the house.

Knowing that, any adult who doesn't follow a similar path is absolutely complacent and a participant in the practice, even if they don't personally assault Palestinians or destroy their property.
