NH House passed a bill banning child marriage, and it goes to the Governor's desk to sign.

Arguing against was state rep. Jess Edwards. He had this to say:

If we continually restrict the freedom of marriage as a legitimate social option, when we do this to people who are a ripe, fertile age and may have a pregnancy and a baby involved, are we not, in fact, making abortion a much more desirable alternative, when marriage might be the right solution for some freedom-loving couples?

I don't think "freedom-loving" is the word he was looking for

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt I'm sure he doesn't deserve and say he means between 2 children/teenagers marrying, however even then using "who are a ripe, fertile age and may have a pregnancy and a baby" as an anti-abortion justification for the practice is always going to be uncomfortably gross justification.

They really do just view girls and women as baby making machines good for little else other than maybe cooking. Like, what if that 14 year old doesn't want a kid yet because she has dreams of a career and life before starting a family? Fuck whatever she wants in life, I guess.

Read further into his statement, yeah it seems like he thinks dudes in their 50s should be able to marry 16 year old girls. I was right to cautiously give him the benefit of the doubt and should have read the full statement first.

I feel like this (child marriage, age of consent) is an area where the current laws are woefully behind the culture. The average life expectancy isn't 40 anymore. Girls aren't expected to marry at 16 and immediately start making babies, a third of whom won't even survive to adulthood. Most of the public realizes that a teenager entering a relationship with an adult in their 30s/40s is a bad idea and could be deeply harmful to the teen's development. Times have changed and kids are simply staying kids longer, yet child marriage is still legal in most of the country, and the most common age of consent in the US is still 16. Those things should change imo.

People like this shouldn't be anywhere near the public, much less representing them

The minimum age is already been raised to 16 for marriage according to the article. This isn't a dispute about whether or not 13/14/15 yo should be able to get married it's for 16/17yos

Basically they're saying they're not convinced that child marriage is an epidemic in the US and they're worried that by making laws against it, could end up being twisted in the future by anti-gay marriage politicians.
