I ran a mile once in about 5:50 in my mid teens. I don't think could even run a quarter mile now over 20 years later.

When I would run on the treadmill I would usually ramp up slowly and do it in 9 minutes. Could bump it down to at least 8 if I was trying for speed.

i think I could break 6 minutes if I tried. Im about 20 years past anything competitive, but can comfortably dip under 7:30 pace still on an 8 mile run. I dont think I could break 5 anymore.

I never tried to speed run it. On a treadmill it usually takes me like 15 minutes at a decent jog.

Flat five minutes back in prime days, now I bet I could still run it but not that quick.

I did an 11 minute two mile my senior year. Won the whole meet by finishing first.

I never run just one, to be fair. Normally Ill run somewhere between 8 and 12 at a go.

These days, just over 7 minutes. In my prime, I could maintain 5 minute miles over about 7 or 8 miles, then Id start to lose a bit of speed. My best time in a ten mile race was 55 minutes flat.

Dont know if I ever timed just a mile. I used to run a 3.1 mile trail and pushed myself to consistently do it in just under 30 minutes. If I did only a mile and didnt have to worry about conserving energy I suppose I couldve done 6-7 minutes

Everyone is Steve Prefontaine in this topic.

I have never done a timed mile. We did 1.5 miles when I was in the Navy for PT test. Id come in around 10.5 minutes which was fairly middle of the pack. All I knew was I had to be under 13:30. That is all I cared about.

I always played a lot of sports growing up and ran a lot during football and basketball but always hated just regular running.

awareness of Steve Prefontaine, and being in different to running is a very small segment of the Venn diagram. All I know is I was a decent runner in my competitive days, but Glob wouldve annihilated me.

and yeah, the guy who ran the three minute eight second mile would also have crushed me.

I ran in my school's cross country team and lettered in it.

I ran the 3200, 1600, and 800 in middle school track. A six minute mile isn't anything major in distance running circles especially on a track.

I wasn't anywhere close to special or Prefontaine. I just ran alot. I was the worst runner on my cross country team.

I am horribly out of shape now.

You are severely underestimating Prefontaine. The majority of high schools have their best current runner under 5 minute mile.

But the generic athletic is probably better ready for a sprint, so being athletic doesn't necessarily mean a good mile time.
