So it's been a really long time since I've seen Legends of the Hidden Temple so I could definitely be wrong here but there weren't really any puzzles that required you to grab something from another room, were there? Like all the parts of the silver monkey were in that one room - you didn't have to like grab one in the swamp and then make your way back up there, did you?

There was the extra pendant that you could complete but that's just getting an extra life if the guards caught you, not really an exploration/unlock thing.

So I feel like it shouldn't count as a Metroidvania.

duh. Then...

Hollow Knight (While obviously not the first indie metroidvania, it kinda caused the scene to explode and holds almost as much influence as it's progenitors these days)
Metroid Prime (Wanted to limit to one game per series, but after racking my brain, I don't think anything else could functionally work. 3D metroidvanias are rare, yet it was done near perfectly here)

Would've included Dark Souls over MP, but it doesn't fit the description. I would certainly disagree with that description!!

Cave Story is an important contributor to the Metroidvania genre -- it's the inspiration for dozens of games that aren't actually Metroidvanias but people call them that anyway

Add: Metroid Prime

Personally surprised at the amount of support for Shadow Complex. It was fine! Just associated it closer to the tier of like Guacamelee in terms of quality and influence -- fun, but not impacting the landscape.
