Rules:

  1. Rate each character on a scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. Anything above 10 gets rounded down to a 10, and anything below a 1 gets rounded up to a 1.
  2. Anything beyond one decimal point will be rounded accordingly: .04 and below will be rounded down, .05 and up will be rounded up.
  3. You may grade on any criteria you like.
  4. Consider the character's appearances throughout the entire Ace Attorney series.
  5. You can rate characters from previous topics if you miss a topic.
  6. On a day with multiple characters, clearly label which rating applies to which characters.
  7. On a day with multiple characters, you may skip a character to rate.
  8. Pretty much every character from Ace Attorney will be rated. The schedule will go in chronological game order in the West (with AAI2 being right after AAI just for consistency). When a character debuts and gets a major speaking role, they will show up (so Trucy appearing for a moment in 4-1 doesn't count as a 4-1 character). Major characters get their own day and minor characters are all ranked at once. All extremely minor characters (background, animals, mascots, and jury) will be rated on the final day.
  9. The "roles" listed are: Defense, Rival, Assistant, Detective, Judge, Victim, Defendant, Culprit, Witness, Background, Animal, Mascot, and Jury. Sorry, I'm not pointing out accomplices.

My rating: 9.2/10

I used to really not like Mia. In terms of gameplay, she always provided an easy out, with 1-2 being the worst of it. Turning my thinking towards story and character, though, and Mia really improves. I like that she plays the mentor role completely straight. She's this great lawyer that Phoenix needs to rely on early in the game but he learns to adopt Mia's words and strategy until he surpasses Mia by the end of the OT. So many of the most endearing motifs in Ace Attorney stems from Mia. Of course, playing T&T just cemented Mia's spot for me. I think her romantic pairing with Godot is a little off, but it's not really the spotlight at all for either character.

Used to not like her too much for the DEM qualities in the first game, but I've come around on her. AA3 also helped her a lot.

She's great and has always been great. I could do without her busting out of spirit medium costumes, but personality wise, she's awesome. Never really minded her showing up to save the day either (although the 1-5 "cameo," if you can call it that, was pointless).

Mia Fey - 5

Mia is put on a big pedestal and to me it just doesn't really feel earned (it's told rather than shown) and ends up feeling tiresome-- I wish she was spirit channeled more sparingly as a "whoa!" kinda moment than just being a regular occurrence. I think most of my problems with Spirit Channeling in the plot trace back to Mia Fey.

I do like her in the T&T prequel cases a good deal, which is what keeps her from a well below 5 score.

There's a few ass pull moments with her (1-2, hello ...) but she's still solid. And wow is her design great, too. I love it when a fanservice-y character is treated and written as an actual character first and foremost.

playable AA3 mia almost retroactively justifies the aura that mia gets in AA1/2 and the spirit channeling is easily the worst part of 3-5

but yeah she's terrible for two games

Yeah I actually agree it does some work in that regard

Pure AA1/2 Mia gets like a 2 from me and it's not because I think she's an amazing character in the flashback cases exactly that I rated her 5 overall (she's good but not a favorite)
