Ohio lawmakers urged to add Biden to November ballot

Ohio's governor is pushing state lawmakers to avoid a partisan clash threatening to bar US President Joe Biden from the key swing state's presidential ballot in November.

The state's top election official said earlier this week that Democrats are nominating their candidate too late to comply with Ohio's ballot access laws.

Such conflicts have been quietly resolved in the past - but the Biden campaign may be forced to sue to get on the ballot.

On Thursday, the governor said he was calling the Legislature to convene for a rare special session to pass a law allowing Mr Biden to appear on the ballot.

IMO this kind of case should be handled by letting them on but charging a significant late fee; maybe resorting to disqualification only if the same person / party does it multiple times within a small number of elections. Also the lateness should be publicized. That way democracy isn't interfered with on technicalities but lateness is still discouraged, and people can decide for themself if (or perhaps, when, as some might not want to care this election but may care in a more normal one) it's a factor in who they'll vote for.

Oh, yep. There it is.

Ohio itself has done the same in the past, with its Legislature making exceptions for Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential nominee in 2012, and Mr Trump in 2020.
But the state's Republican House speaker said the body would not make a legislative fix to the issue.
"There's just not the will do that from the Legislature," Speaker Jason Stephens told reporters on Tuesday.

Literally admitting it out loud.

Because there's no set date, the state changes it every election year, whereas the conventions tend to happen roughly the same time every year.

Because Ohio just randomly changes the date all the time.

Case in point. Neither party can accurately comply with them.

DeWine is also the one who rejected the anti-trans legislation from their legislature because he went out and talked to trans-children and was genuinely moved into not being a despicably bigoted sack of shit hatemonger on the subject. And then the legislature overrode his veto.

Seems he's still got some semblance of political intelligence unlike the vast majority of the Republican Party which is just looking for the quickest shortcut to a Christo-fascist state.

If Biden's not on the ballot in Ohio in 2024. There needs to be a hefty price to pay by those who made this happen. The Republicans in the legislature can't be allowed to get away with this. Doesn't matter how red the state is, and this goes for all these Republican states trying to remove Biden from their ballots for no legit reason. You try to subvert democracy, one way or another, you will pay for it.

That's different. Republicans in CO (yes, it was Republicans who sued to have Trump removed from the ballot, not Dems) tried to keep Trump off the ballot for insurrection, which is specifically laid out in the Cons. Two CO courts, including their SC, concluded that based off the trial evidence that Trump did indeed constitute as an insurrectionist. When the USSC gave their asinine and overreaching ruling they themselves didn't even discuss that portion, which indicates that they don't disagree with the conclusion that Trump is an insurrectionist, they just don't care.

What Ohio and Alabama are doing is something that happens literally every election cycle to both Dems and Repubs and no state has ever given a shit about. I agree that what CO did is likely the catalyst for why they've started to "care", however it still boils down to merely revenge for someone trying to hold Trump accountable for being an insurrectionist and Republicans seeking vengeance for that.

They are not justified in this because it's all about revenge when previous years have shown no state actually gave a shit if someone officially made the deadline or not in regards to a convention.

Not actual empathy or humanity. He's still a republican. But I guess we're seeing the bar at "politically expedient" and "intelligent" which just the lowest possible threshold for an elected representative you could set: don't piss off the constituency.

Do you have quotes where I said Trump shouldn't be charged cause I don't feel that way and don't recall saying it.

Also never said republican would retaliate over statues though there probably would be some backlash but mostly just angry screeching or attempts at intimidation before hand. Also I can't remember if I admitted to losing that debate but I did and I'm admitting it now in case I didn't.
