It's ridiculous. You can't put a "disguise" on to perceive something like racism from another's perspective. At the end of the day, being black isn't a costume for me. My race is not something I can take off and hang in the closet. People like the author come off as tone deaf.

it reminds me of that story about the millionaire who wanted to see how it was like being homeless but he stopped when he started worrying about his health, or something.

like, if you want to experience what others are going through but can stop when it's convenient, then you're missing the point of everything.

a druggie prostitute did surgery on him to fix his face after it was cut all up bad. The side effects made him black.
so of course the first thing he does is go to Detroit to the hood and team up with Luke Cage.
then a few issues later they say his skin just faded back to its normal color.
no joke. Its ridiculous

Yup, John Howard Griffin did it in the early 60's and he wasn't even the first, just the most well-known.

Because first hand experience is very important when learning about things.

idk if some gimmicky blackface is going to give you anything meaningful about society's current race relations.

even if the makeup is passable, he can still act or say things trying to elicit certain reactions, even if he's not intentionally trying to do so.

On a serious note, it would certainly teach you a lot more about race relations within the country than anything else available as a white person. You will never really understand someone unless you've been in their shoes, even with a convenient eject button.

Of course, that would also depend on whether this is an earnest, genuine attempt at understanding life as a black person or a way to generate clout to fuel your narcissism while skirting around the truth of your "personal journey".

at the very least, you can mike up an actual black person, and listen through/guide them through different encounters for something more genuine.

This is less about the subject of the piece, than it is about him doing something he thinks people will see as brave or noble. It's really just narcissism.

Honestly I'd be fine with him doing this if he really wanted to experience what racism was like first hand and then wrote up an article about it.

But he's selling a book about his experience instead. Just makes it feel like a cash grab.

But this does remind me of the show "Black. White." that aired back in 2006 with Ice Cube as one of the executive producers. They had a black family see what it was like to be white and a white family see what it was like to be black
