This keeps happening every time you get a milquetoast liberal like Macron, demanding to maintain the status quo, in pivotal moments in history where the status quo is shit. You need to actively make things better to combat fascists. Fascists prey on the desperate and they're well-funded by the rich. Meanwhile the voter support you need is depressed by apathy over what feels like a hopeless situation. This is why I scream about the democratic party in the US and the ineffective leadership they keep trying to promote.

Long before the writ dropped, the French, Germans, and Polish authorities discovered an elaborate Russian disinformation campaign called "Portal Kombat".

Frances VIGINUM, a state agency created in 2021 to fight foreign interference, analysed information portals between September and December 2023 and found 193 sites that spread false claims suggesting Russias war in Ukraine is a legitimate military exercise.

The sites disseminate information from the social media accounts of Russian or pro-Russian actors, Russian news agencies, and local websites. Content on the sites also takes on controversial topics that could "contribute to dividing the Francophone debate," according to VIGINUM.

And, this time the disinformation is automated courtesy of LLM tools.

OpenAI identified and removed five covert influence operations based in Russia, China, Iran and Israel that were using its artificial intelligence tools to manipulate public opinion, the company said on Thursday.

In a new report, OpenAI detailed how these groups, some of which are linked to known propaganda campaigns, used the companys tools for a variety of deceptive activities. These included generating social media comments, articles, and images in multiple languages, creating names and biographies for fake accounts, debugging code, and translating and proofreading texts. These networks focused ona range of issues, including defending the war in Gaza and Russias invasion of Ukraine, criticizing Chinese dissidents, and commenting onpolitics in India, Europe, and the U.S. in their attempts to sway public opinion. While these influence operations targeted a wide range of online platforms, including X (formerly known as Twitter), Telegram, Facebook, Medium, Blogspot, and other sites, none managed to engage a substantial audience according to OpenAI analysts.

I think it's social media. You go on Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, etc., and all you see are hyper conservative comments non-stop. It's not just in the US, the other countries see it too. Between that, and the propaganda campaigns about "The left/liberals/democrats/progressives are destroying <insertbigthing>", all over social media as well, the right wing has been emboldened to "fight back" globally. It's in the movie industry, the video game industry, TV industry, marketing industry, social media industry, and finally, the mainstream media and politics industry.

It's depressing seeing it.

that was a really broken system and the nazis used violence and coercion to gain power and especially to consolidate it. generally democracy is a much better system than any alternative but obv a society needs strong safeguards and protections against undemocratic bad actors

Macron will remain president no matter what because of how France's system works. My guess is he is hoping for one of the following things:

1) He hopes that the EU elections scare people into voting for his party

2) He expects the far right to win the snap election creating a situation where his party can blame them during the next presidential election.

My point was just that democracy is often used to end democracy. That was also the case in Hungary and Russia once Orban/Putin got in. Once they used the system they bastardized it to a point where nobody actually considers it a democracy, even if it is on paper.

Oh, Hamas was also democratically elected and then ended elections.

Democracy is a bad system because it gives equal voting power to everyone and the average person has very poor knowledge of how they should vote for their own interests. However, in most cases all other forms of government are usually worse than democracy.
