This sort of shit just infuriates me. Not only a blatant violation of the first amendment, but the fact that so many politicians in this ass backwards country still want to force their bronze age mythology on the rest of us as if it's a foregone conclusion that there's any truth whatsoever in that religion. Isnt the point of Jesus that he came to replace the law and his believers should live in the spirit of love and grace through his redemptive sacrifice? There's whole, wild arguments about "fulfilled" vs "abolished" the law when it comes to what Jesus said he'd do. And then there's one of the apostles, in a letter, who says that even if Jesus did all that, if you got circumcised it doesn't matter and you have to follow the Old Law. For reasons. Ten Commandments in school? YES The obsession the GOP has with refusing to feed kids in school infuriates me more than anything they do. Including their attempts to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. People voting Republican need to understand that they are voting for people who actually justified cutting school lunch programs by arguing that there was no evidence that kids performed better in school when they were fed. Can you imagine thinking that way? No decent person can. Of course, some do understand and think the cruelty is the point. The GOP is very invested in forcing women to have children, and forcing their beliefs on those children. What I'm okay with is on their desk same as a family photo or knick knack. I guess "displaying" was a bad choice of word. Yeah, that's a bit different. The First Amendment doesn't require that government-funded spaces are devoid of religion - it just means that any mentions of religion have to be in a manner that they cannot be construed as a public endorsement of said religion. As far as I'm aware, teachers are allowed to display aspects of their life at work, and if that includes religion, then so long as it isn't in an "in-your-face" type of way, or done in order to discriminate against or exclude a student who doesn't share the same religious beliefs, it's usually considered protected under an individual's First Amendment right to self-expression. A teacher can have a Bible in his classroom, but if that same teacher starts reading sermons from the Bible and quoting it to kids who he thinks aren't behaving correctly, then a line has been crossed, since that teacher is now endorsing said religion in a public fashion. One example of a public display of religion that is acceptable would be the World Trade Center cross in the 9/11 Museum - it is a historical artifact, and as such, its display in the museum is not considered to be an "endorsement" of Christianity (one reason why the ACLU, notorious for its vigilance on issues like this, didn't challenge the presence of the cross in the museum). The state *mandating* a display of the Ten Commandments in every classroom would clearly be interpreted as the state endorsing said religion (especially since the bill's proponents have admitted as such), and as such should be ruled unconstitutional, but who knows what these Federalist society justices will do. --- Not changing this sig until the Knicks win the NBA Championship! Unless they're gay and live in Florida. That would be indoctrination. Which is why Florida has a lot of teacher vacancies. Even if you're not gay, or if you *are* religious, who wants to work in that type of environment? I gotta figure that even teachers with the same personal beliefs as DeSantis are going to be very wary of working in his state, because everybody knows what the GOP's real aim is - destroying public education so they can redirect tax dollars towards vouchers for private schools that would essentially subsidize private schools for wealthy families. Incidentally, the fact that they call that a "teacher shortage" is just infuriating. A shortage implies that you're trying to find people and you can't find them - but the truth is that they're running people out of the profession. --- Not changing this sig until the Knicks win the NBA Championship!
