Are you specifically seeking the gore aspect or the Lovecraftian inspiration? Or anything that just starts early and keeps it going until the end?

Edit: Ive been recently going through the Lovecraft stories, inspired by, or includes elements of. On top of that I like psychological horror. But Im usually not into gore for the sake of it.

It isn't a genre I particularly care for and honestly I find most of the time it comes off cheesy and almost comical in many instances.

The movies I find to be more chilling are psychological thrillers that could actually be real. Stuff like Se7en, Kiss the Girls, things like that.

It Follows (and Smile) are very stressful and unsettling since at any point in time the main character is never safe.

Smile was was of the scariest and most stressful theater experiences I've ever had, because you don't have the liberty of checking your phone, pausing the movie, or talking to friends/spouse in order to break the tension. you just have to watch. some of that tension is lost watching it at home.

I typically avoid the genre but stumbled upon one that was a bit much for me. I forget the name, but it was some Japanese flick from the late 80s or early 90s I want to say. Some corporate boss holds these job interviews with a bunch of different women. One of them gets the job and I forget what the conflict was, but the boss had done something egregious apparently, because by the end she captured him and started torturing him in a heinously sadistic fashion using needles and cheese wire. It was such a long sequence too, I bailed before the end. It just felt way too real for me to sit through. The rest of the movie was relatively tame though, except for a scene where some guy who was held captive in a burlap sack was forced to eat vomit out of a dog bowl.

Was just a bit too much for me.

The Breach was pretty good and the good stuff you want.

Underwater isnt any official Lovecraft story, but it absolutely comes across as one. You have a few minutes of intro and then its discomfort all the way through (extra points if you dislike deep sea or tight spaces).

Dagon (2000) isnt good, but its Lovecraft through and through and never lets up from the start.

Event Horizontechnically not Lovecraft, but definitely has some elements and is a fairly nonstop science fiction horror.

I just watched Smile, and will absolutely agree it was worth it.

The Mist (2007) has all of the fear of the unknown combined with creatures that seem otherworldly. A little slower, but with some horrific scenes, and also a locked in a building with survivors situation.

Re-Animator (1985), definitely cheesy and low budget, but its incredibly screwed up.

Prometheus is a very divisive movie and part of the overall Alien universe, but it has heavy emphasis on ancient designers, biological creation, and things humans think they can play with that far exceed our understanding. Its very story heavy so starts a little slower, but its fairly dark and suspenseful until the good stuff starts. Its not the typical Alien face hugger and xenomorph.

If you like Prometheus, Covenant is the next part of that and continues the story (still pre-Alien lore wise).

Annihilation is also story heavy, but it delves into the unexplainable, otherworldly creationism, and once it starts it is quite unsettling.

The Endless is good if you want something more story related that is both fascinating and terrifying. Basic premise is cult survivors revisit their old cult because of an odd video, and realize the being the cult worships may actually exist. I enjoyed it as a low budget and surprisingly well executed story, but it does lack the gore and body horror; most of the fear comes from the slow understanding of their surroundings.

The Lighthousethis one issomething else. No direct Lovecraft link and a very visually creative slow creep. But its dark and mysterious from the start, and slowly ramps up the insanity all the way through. Its a fantastic movie, but its so odd in some ways it wasnt as enjoyable to me personally.

For stuff that I just enjoyed and is fairly screwed up, Splinter was pretty unique and very disturbing.

Ravage (2019) is also very screwed up, and pits a capable survivalist against cruel people in the country. Not a slasher, more a revenge flick, but the ending (to me) made it seem like the story isnt over, and its left up to our imagination what happens next.

Last Shift (2014). Extremely disturbing movie and right up there with Smile on ones I recommend that have nothing to do with Lovecraft.

Thats all I have for nowafter posting a book

One of the great founders of modern horror. More interesting than Mary Shelly or Bram Stoker, slashers are boring to me, and the rest of horror usually falls under the category of supernatural/religious (demons, possessions/etc). A lot of the other stuff is just unnecessary jump scares to pretend normal stuff is creepy (compared to Smile where the jump scares were completely on point). Lovecrafts own material wasnt always good (see Re-Animator), but it was always unsettling, and that fits the topic. Ive never read any of his work though, the blatant bigotry would probably get to me.

I have not! Thank you for the recommendation. I honestly didnt even start watching horror until last year or maybe the year before. Before I was on my current medication, the horror got in my head and would take over my idle mind when trying to rest for years.
