Was that the Cate Blanchett one? If so, good movie.
I don't believe she was in this one.

The main actors were Jason Bateman and Joel Edgerton. The plot revolves around a man randomly encountering someone he went to high school with, and then things quickly get.... strange.

Im going to open withthis movie is horrible if you have a weak stomach. The gore, violence, and depravity are definitely on the extreme side; non-consensual acts advisory for people sensitive to that. Apparently this is very similar to a comic called Crossed, if that gives anyone an idea.

Anyway, Taiwanese movie called The Sadness. Heavy judgment of COVID, politics, and the response to it is in the film; though I doubt anyone here minds. Its almost entirely practical effects, but its over the top. No real camp or cheese, so dont expect funny unless youre basically numb to movie gore, and even then its dark.

Definitely doesnt fit in very well with psychological horror, but it is probably unsettling to most people, so I thought Id throw it out there.

It's pretty well regarded these days especially since most places you can watch it now have the international ending instead of the trash US happy ending.

International is only 1 min longer. I think the international version is considered Canon now since it was the original ending after all. Think that's the version you get on all digital platforms.

So what happened in the version you watched?

Oh I think you did watch the US version. In the international version, that entire escaping the cave sequence was a hallucination. After seeing Juno, "Sarah suddenly awakens, back in the cave. She sees a vision of her dead daughter Jessica, and smiles as the shrieks of crawlers grow closer."

Ah, thank you. I immediately felt the hallucination was obvious for what its worthyet another head impact, coming off medication, the light appeared after she fellthe vomit was basically the green light on yep, shes got a concussion and the fact she was still in the cave the whole time.

You were on point since that was what they were leading to. They felt American movie goers wouldn't want such a depressing ending so they just stopped the movie at that point.

I honestly feel that one is the happier end. She gets to hallucinate her daughter as shes obviously dying, instead of remembering her last moments were betraying Juno.

Terrified is a good one
Watching it now. It definitely has that full time unsettling mystery aspect. The oddest yet most interesting feature is almost how its anti-jump scare. You have scenes that seem like obvious jump scare setups, but instead the moment passes with a slow transition instead of the cheap startle.

Havent finished it, but the ending would have to be horrendous to not recommend at this point, because its been good.
Solid recommendation. The instant immersion into a world where something is wrong, with a slow buildup as the plot hits its stride, until fear lingers tangibly in the air. You can see the similarities with When Evil Lurks, a unique horror world building experience.

Luz would be a good pick. I'd recommend not watching the trailerm. It's not a traditional narrative, and being in the dark seems to be part of the experience. Just be sure to find the 2018 horror movie, there some romantic drama by the same name.

Pieces (1982). That ending was unsettling when in the last minute, it goes from a serial killer movie to a undead creature. That sewn-together dead woman, assemble with various parts from other women the serial killer had murdered, coming to life and grabbing that poor dude by the balls and crushing them with superhuman strength. Definitely that ending came out of nowhere. I definitely felt it in the manhood region when I watched that scene, back when I was young and more easily scared of horror movies.

I don't know how you could watch the American version of The Descent's ending and conclude that it's a "good one" I mean you've got the international "her escape was just a hallucination; she's actually still in the cave" vs the US "she's still in the cave in her mind, and there probably weren't any crawlers to begin with; she slaughtered her friends *minus Juno* while suffering from claustrophobia-induced hallucinations"

I'd say the international version is definitely a much more more dreary ending, but the US version is the worse fate.

I watched it. Lots of gore and disturbing visuals but I wouldn't say there was much tension just cause it was so over the top, almost cartoonish.

Was pleasantly surprised by Moloch. But despite starting the mystery and horror early, it was definitely more of a slow build to an unexpected end. Supernatural folklore horror/thriller.

I will never forgive them for fucking up the first reveal of the cave monsters by putting it in the goddamn trailer.

That would have been one of the absolute best jump scares of all time.

The US ending was also garbage but this is the thing that irritates me.

Thanks for the recommendation. It authentically felt like a movie made in its time, had some great performances, and kept up the mystery and unsettling feeling throughout. It was long, and a bit too artsy in ways, but I didnt feel like my time was wasted.

Started a series called From. Horror series tend to eventually devolve into soap opera drama between individuals, but its interesting in the beginning at least. Not quite unsettling enough to make the list, admittedly, but still worth mentioning for anyone else who might be bored and looking for a way to pass the time.

I take it back. Theres some weak moments with drama between characters taking over the plot, but the overall story focuses heavily on the mystery and unknown. I just started S2 and Im hoping it stays consistent.

Not sure if I would call it disturbing, but The Wolf House has some really twisted and creative stop animation. It can feel pretty dark and weird, but also get a bit boring because it gets into the "art for arts sake" territory.
