Two NASA astronauts who rode to orbit on Boeing's Starliner are currently stranded in space aboard the International Space Station (ISS) after engineers discovered numerous issues with the Boeing spacecraft. Teams on the ground are now racing to assess Starliner's status.

Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were originally scheduled to return to Earth on June 13 after a week on the ISS, but their stay has been extended for a second time due to the ongoing issues. The astronauts will now return home no sooner than June 26th, according to NASA.

After years of delays, Boeing's Starliner capsule successfully blasted off on its inaugural crewed flight from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 10:52 a.m. EDT on June 5. But during the 25-hour flight, engineers discovered five separate helium leaks to the spacecraft's thruster system.

Now, to give engineers time to troubleshoot the faults, NASA has announced it will push back the perilous return flight, extending the crew's stay on the space station to at least three weeks.

Multiple things went wrong with the Starliner and now they can't return home.

At least there's still a choice with pit bulls, sometimes under circumstances one can't choose what brand of plane they fly.

I haven't been on a plane since 2010 i think. But if I ever fly again, I'll try to avoid boeing

Boeing needs to be held criminally liable at this point.

Boeing holds defense contracts they will never be held liable maybe they will changes ceo's but tthats it

This is such a colossus fuck up. Boeing can't seem to do anything right.

That said, some seem to be being a little hyperbolic in here too. Obviously, the effects on the body get worse over time, but I don't see how a couple extra weeks on a short trip will be THAT bad on them.

There's no problem with the parts that get them home, but it's basically a case of not wanting to throw your garbage away too early. Once they discard the service module, that's it.

3 weeks in the space station may be fun. Wonder how they docked with it to get onboard.

There's a docking port at the top of the capsule.

It's just totally routine for the station to have multiple things docked to it these days.

I really hope those parachutes work. Because one of the unique things about starliner is that it lands on land.

There's multiple ways to get home. Just a matter of how much we want to embarrass Boeing in the process.

How fucking embarassing would it be if Space x came to get them home boeing stock would tank

To be fair there aren't exactly many other places other than the ships that take them up and down. As in, there is one other place other than space itself. China's station.

That would be scary as fuck. I would rather be trapped in an actual haunted house with ghosts and demons than stranded in outer space with little to no hope of rescue.

Even if those demons are rapey, shake your bed all the fucking time so you can't sleep, make traumatizing phonecalls imitating the voice/etc. of your friends/loved ones, and fuck with your computer so you can't work from home?
