Smashingpmkns 07/12/24 1:36:50 AM #1:	Fantastic movie. The marketing really blew up the scare factor but it's a real uneasy film from start to finish. A couple of jump scare but mostly its just terror throughout. Also you can tell Oz Perkins knows of Remedy games or at least Control cuz there's definitely a little bit of that specifically (not its inspos) in the movie. Nicolas Cage killed it. Dude was creepy af. Maika Monroe was the heart of the movie though. Just really pulled you into her character from the jump. Some good funny moments too. There are some really stupid shit, but the movie is actually self aware of it. The concept of the 'slasher' genre I guess is just antithetical to me because people seem to go into those excited about the deaths. I don't like Saw either for the same reasons. I'm looking at my letterboxd and my highest rated horror movie is The Thing (1982). That's actually an interesting one to realize I like after what I just wrote. There's a lot of deaths, but the movie also isn't super concerned with humanizing the characters, so it's less upsetting (but I still get upset when ~~Windows~~ dies lol). They're also all rude adult men as opposed to innocent kids or something. And the focus of the movie is how to defeat The Thing. The team has to come up with logical solutions and defenses that are tested by their own dwindling patience & sanity. The movie IIRC never dwells on somebody's prolonged inevitable suffering or anything like that despite being an infection movie. I guess if I'm going to watch a horror movie I want it to have some kind of thriller component, a way to "win", and I like rules. My experience has been that my least favorite sub genre of horror is religion/supernatural movies, which seem to like to go the "nothing can save you hahaha suffer horribly" route. I consider a movie like The Borderlands (2013) to be unwatchable, I'll also say that for Blair Witch (2016). These kinds of movies do have rules sometimes but they're more like "this is how and when you'll die hahahaha" so the rules just add to people's prolonged suffering. I don't know if I remember any others I was feeling a bit ill before the movie and this is already a film that is designed to get under your skin and make you uncomfortable for the whole duration. The movie itself was great, but holy crap my anxiety was just through the roof the entire time. I gave it an 8.5/10 and I will def see it again when I am feeling better. The plot was weak and the reveal at the end was so disappointing and I felt like it was a big waste of time. It wasn't even scary! I'm all for slow-burn horror but this ain't it. I love the way it looks like an early 90's movie. With most big movies being shot digitally now, everything just looks so clean, and pristine. Either just have Nic being himself or if you want him being someone/something else then get a different actor. Some of his scenes just ruined it. but the nonstop dark lighting was too much. She was in her house with numerous lights on in every room, but it looked like there was only one candle lit. shes reading papers, looking at photos and evidence all in a dark room? Why? It doesnt always have to be dark to set a mood, it takes out the realism, use fluorescent lighting with that low hum. Then its eerie and creepy in a realistic way. but I wish it was played more as a serial killer straight story. it just felt like it was filled with lots of coincidences and plot holes like a major point brought up many times was no one was at the houses during the murders. Yet there was, even in neighborhoods her car sat outside. How can there never be any evidence of her. She was walking in mud and snow to houses. Her car was in mud. Tracks left all over.
