I want to resurrect breath of fire. My main reason for doing so is because I still believe a rpg series where you main guy transforms into a goddamn dragon has untapped potential.

Will I change anything? Yes....yes I will.

Now this may get me crucified by other older jrpg fans, but...........action-based. (lmao). Wait, hear me out for a second...

The one thing that has always made breath of fire stand out from it's fellow jrpgs was the dragon gimmick. Breath of fire 3 was on to a really good idea with the dragon gene system, and then breath of fire 4 dumbed it down again. (It still pisses me off that part 5 made being a dragon a actual bad thing that you weren't supposed to do/rely on, and its like.......dragons is the main reason I played this series in the first place).

To me, the old plain turn-based system that breath of fire used to use in the first 4 games doesn't quite get across the "scale" of being a big awesome dragon guy that I always had in my head. With "being a dragon" as the main focus point for a breath of fire revival here is how I would envision it using the super awesome power of the PS5, xbox series X and PC...

You have smaller sections that plays out more similar to panzer dragoon, where you fly around in a more typical wing dragon form and lay waste to whatever the hell base you are invading....the game's nina is also riding you and helping with spell options here. Also we got to have a warren and grassrunner race people along for the ride....breath of fire has cool races and they must be used. These sections won't drag on too long so the player don't get sick of them...

The most common section would be the game's ryu going around on-foot with standard rpg happenings as normal. Still got the master system that can boost certain stats higher on level up and teach you certain skills. I don't quite want a breath of fire game that is 100 percent pure action though....I want more of those hybrid systems that combines action and having turns to do your main moves. Being able to turn into a dragon here is tied to a meter, and using different genes gets you different combos like in breath of fire 3. Everything is fully controllable here, so like if you turn into some sort of roly-poly dragon form where you roll around in a ball you get to control all of that.

The juiciest bombastic sections will be saved only for like major climatic showdowns with the local demon or whatever else that requires this level of power. Big-ass dragon. Think something like those summon battles in FF16. Really want to go on a path of desctruction here, like that one neo geo game king of the monsters. After the battle is done everything is a crater and all the townsfolk would be like "wahhhh you destroyed our home. You brood our monsters!". Our ryu will feel all bad but it doesn't matter the fight was awesome.

It is the breath of fire game of my dreams and I must have it.

While I think Tooie is the inferior game, I think a lot of its design ideas were genuinely ahead of their time. I want to see the interconnected world expanded into something akin to Dark Souls 1, where the levels loop back on themselves and everything has a sense of geography and place. Im sure it would be tough to fill a world like that with platforming exploration instead of combat, but I truly believe this is what Tooie was meant to be.

Add some form of map and objective tracking (were borrowing the level design philosophy of Dark Souls, not building an actual soulslike) and I think you have the capacity for something truly special.

I also would love to see alundra come back (the first alundra in particular. Lets kinda ignore the 2nd one was even a thing). A game where you have to go into people's dreams and conquer their nightmares also has a lot of fun potential that they could keep working with.

Shenmue. Remake 3 and finish the series in the traditional Dreamcast format.

F-Zero, nothing fancy, absolutely no motion controls whatsoever, no gimmicks, just a good followup to GX

I remember a lot people (myself included) thought Xenosaga would be Episode I of that saga, not a separate one.

Planescape Torment's another. I remember someone tried to make a fan sequel that had some interesting ideas.
