i loved most of it. I did not like any of the original characters. They felt like fanfiction p-tier self inserts, didnt speak like normal humans, and were honestly boring. Rosche was ok because he actually did something, but he felt really annoying half the time.

Anyway, i felt every main story beat was excellent. The Dyne scene was cool, even with the dumb Akira arm and the completely disrespectful Palmer joke boss. Loved the Gi expansion in Cosmo Canyon, and Tifa getting absorbed by a Weapon. Really looking forward to the Weapons in part 3, because i felt they were severely underused in the original.

Ending. I dont know how I feel. I understand what happened, and know why they did it, but they also knew everyone was expecting a huge emotional beat, and it fell flat. Caits death was also kind of dumb and he didnt even do the fortune, which is what made it sad in the original. They also forgave him wayyyy too quickly.

But those gripes aside, I liked it.

I think the consensus is pretty similar to what youve come up with. The ending is certainly something, but we only know how it pays off with the final part so uhhhh

Oh, and I cannot stress enough how much more I like Cait Sith in Rebirth compared to the OG.

The chicken can sidequest was dumb but I really felt relieved when the final one skipped ahead. I was about to ragequit that one haha.

I thought the original Cait death was better, mostly because he did the fortune before. Plus he had a quiet moment of reflection afterwards, which was very unlike his usual boasting and flamboyant dialogues before. New version wasnt bad, and he got a heroic scene, but I sitll prefer the quiet original one,

And yes, Cait was good in this version. He got a lot more screentime, actually contributed a lot, was a good party member in battle, and looked perfect. He even got to ride on Red a couple times.

I thought it was sad in both versions. The way I interpreted it was that each Cait Sith robot has its own consciousness.

Yeah, I like most of the changes, but they completely undercut the impact of Aerith's death scene.

Jenova should also have been the last boss. Safer Sephiroth was not only obnoxiously paced and agonizingly long, but beating him twice already sure makes him seem nonthreatening.

Unless Hell House is in a sideauest, no. But there are more goofy enemies so dont worry.

As for the ending, Im assuming it isnt really Seph, but Jenova messing with Clouds mind. I cant remember if the other party members react to Sephiroth, or if maybe Jenova is using Sephiroths appearance, or if it is actually OG Sephiroth from the lifestream. But either way, i agree, final boss should have been Jenova. We really didnt need that final boss.

i emailed square enix and asked them to hold off on a PC release until i can clear out my backlog. they said yes

Plus, during the very first playthrough of either version, you wouldn't know at the time that Cait Sith is actually each controlled by Reeve.

The ending was one of my bigger gripes. Pretty much for the reasons everyone else has said

Other things I disliked were the game going overboard with unfun side content and Zack having what, 30 minutes of screentime? And that little screentime does nothing with him, all his scenes could be excised and nothing of value would be lost, and it would have the side effect of trimming down the unnecessarily long final boss fight. I also disliked how....on the rails it was. This really did not feel like the "unknown journey" that the end of Remake promised.

Some of the story beats didn't hit as much as they should have, but it's still probably going to be my GotY.

Some may call the side content filler or bloat, but that content was still fun as hell, and I genuinely enjoyed doing them.

How they dealt with that important death was the worst thing they couldve done. This is the climax of the game, yet you robbed people of having that feeling cause you didnt show the characters adequately mourning. Gameplay wise its a 9.5/10.

I didn't even mind the fake-out where the death didn't happen. It was everything afterwards and how it was handled that took away the impact of it.

Like, it's pretty clear that Aerith IS dead, but is going to be present as a part of Cloud's mental degradation. Which is kind of a cool idea...but it would be for Cloud's development. And it feels like the devs themselves don't want to move on either.

I've seen theories of what the ending means and I like what some of them would lead to, but overall I did think it was kinda poorly done. The confusion over Aerith's fate really should've been saved for after the final boss and just make the player think she's gone, because when they started shifting between "is she or is she not dead" during the lead up to the final boss it completely took away the emotional impact for me and I thought it ruined the original scene. Even the shock of "Cloud saved her...but actually didn't" could've worked well if they just kept it to that until after the final boss.

Still though, I am really loving the Remake series, it helps that the character writing is good (the complete opposite of the other Compilation entries which is refreshing) and the gameplay is fantastic. I do like a lot of what they're adding to the story, and I really want to see how it ends in Part 3.

Oh yea. If you are gonna tease us with Zack, at least have him DO SOMETHING instead of babysit AU Cloud and Aerith. Like maybe 1 full chapter with him.

That's another thing I was confused about. Zack was given top billing so-to-speak by having him be upfront with Cloud and Sephiroth in keyart, boxart, etc. but his role amounts to like maybe a total of a half hour of screentime.
