Gonna be cliche and say Playstation. Fifth gen is my favorite gen of games though.

PSX JRPG catalogue plus Digimon World is my favorite game of all time.

Playstation had all the JRPGs and fighting games so it's an easy choice for me. The only stuff I missed out on was Zelda and Mario. The N64 didn't even have a Metroid game.

Easily Playstation. And I'm anti Sony but Playstation 1 really dominated that gen. Waaaaaay too many hit classics and for cheap.

Il never forger that christmas. I wanted a sega saturn so badly cos all the arcade ports. I didn't know what games Sony would even get. Man was I glad I got a Playstation

Never wanted an N64, never bought one, have zero nostalgia for it or any of its games, still don't want one.

I mostly bought the PS1 for FFVII. But pretty much every single game released that generation that I cared about at all was on the PS1.

The N64 was basically the console that killed my interest in Nintendo, and no console since has ever won it back.

In the parallel universe where Nintendo doesn't fuck things up and piss off Sony, and the PS1 gets released as the SNES CD-Rom like it was originally supposed to, I probably would have bought an N64, developed nostalgia for it, and might still be buying Nintendo consoles today. But we don't live in that world.

Back then I was all about the jrpgs and felt like my n64 was just "kids stuff"

Now days... I think the N64 classics slightly edge out the ps1s

Comes down to Mario 64, Zeldas two games, Starfox, DK/Banjo/Conker vs Final Fantasies, MGS, Castle Ania and Resident Evil... Close but N64 imo edges those out.

Now I just realized this was centered around some specific year... Not going to bother researching which of those specific games were/weren't out on that specific year.

I had a 64 but got the smaller psone Christmas 2000 because all the hype I read on here and AOL about ff7, RE3 and games like that. But Christmas 98 n64 and Zelda 64 was the top of the tops. I got my copy like 10 days early that year too.

99 would be great to have both but 99 was also like peak Pokmon. Yellow came out that fall. 98- n64. 2000: psx. 1999? GBC

PlayStation. Looking at 1999, games like Driver, Syphon Filter, Medal of Honor, Tony Hawk... the list goes on. And that's not including the games from 97 and 98 still in stores and finding anything from those first four years of existence.

I'd have a tough time justifying an N64 in 1999. Sure, there's Smash Bros. and Donkey Kong, but I'd like to play a bit more than Nintendo, Midway, and Acclaim games (I know other companies contributed but it felt like most of the library by that time was from those three companies)

A PS1 for sure. I enjoyed the N64 for its multiplayer games, FPS', and Zelda. The PS1 was an RPG player's go to console. Squaresoft, Tri-Ace, Enix, to name a few, were on a damned roll.

Then you have survival horror games like Silent Hill and Resident Evil.
Absolute classics like Alundra, Metal Gear Solid, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Kings Field. I also enjoyed RPG Maker and Theme Park.

To me, the N64 was cool to play if you're hanging with your buddies with four controllers, some pizza, and a case of Jolt Cola.
The PS1 took me on some pretty rad adventures.

Playstation 1, I think.

Maybe if it had been 2000-2001, I'd have picked N64, but without those, there's no Majora's Mask, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Paper Mario, Banjo-Tooie, Ogre Battle 64, Kirby 64, Mario Party 2, Pokemon Stadium...

I had a PC back then, and was perfectly happy.

But if I had to chose, probably a PS. It had a few good games I got years later and played on my PS2. N64 I still maintain is the worse Nintendo console (outside of Virtual Boy). I had a friend who owned it and just about every game for it, never really liked any of them.

I would obviously go with the ps1, as I was never super interested in an N64. Which is weird, because some of my earliest gaming memories were playing an SNES at my uncle's place. But I was still much more interested in what the PS1 had to offer.

Everything the N64 had to offer, I either wasn't interested in, was also available on ps1, or the PS1 had as well. Like for example, Mario Kart. I thought (and still do think) Crash Team Racing was better. I'd rather have Crash and Spyro to Mario. Resident Evil was also on PS1, and at the time I didn't really understand or see much difference between either version, though I hear some people think the N64 version was better (still not sure why though?) I had zero interest in Zelda at the time, and many of Nintendo's other exclusives I was just unaware of, or didn't have interest in.
