The USWNT is almost certainly going to win the basketball gold medal this morning, so that would tie with China, and the USWNT (volleyball) is also playing for gold against Italy, so that could be another.

It's kind of funny how the US has gradually become less successful at that, particularly in the men's weight classes (Hampton Morris won the 61kg bronze last week, becoming the first US man with an Olympic medal since 1984, which was famously boycotted by the Soviets who held dominion over the sport at the time). Between Morris and Olivia Reeves winning the first US Olympic weightlifting gold since 2000, "maybe" it's starting to make a comeback?

America has always padded its medal count with the 508292 different swimming events lol

The US definitely left a few gold medals on the table this Olympics. Not to mention the men's high jump from yesterday where the US athlete had gold but then wanted to still compete and then placed second in the jump offs lol.

And yeah, the US gets numbers in swimming and track because they typically have an athlete (often multiple) competing in EVERY swimming and athletics event lol

Meh, Fahrenheit makes sense when talking about the weather because its scale is set for how people experience heat. If your weather is instead perpetually listed as a number between 20 and 30 it isn't useful as a scale.

I read the USA Today article on it and the NZ jumper Hamish Kerr didn't want to share either. It was mutual that they wanted to determine a definitive winner.

Yeah we left at least 6-7 Golds on the table. Biggest disappointment for me was our beach volleyball teams not medalling (or even making the semifinals) for the first time ever since the event started back in the 80's.

4 silver = 1 gold
4 bronze = 1 silver

So silver and bronze don't count? Then why do they track them anyway? Why do they even award medals for second and third place, if they don't count?

They're used for tie breakers. If Gold is tied, it goes to silver, if that is tied it goes to bronze. If America wants to convince the rest of the world that 2nd and 3rd are the same as getting first they're just going to make themselves look ridiculous.

If you want to say "silver and bronze don't matter!", you're the one making yourself look silly. There's a reason why all the medals are counted, not just gold.

Look at the fourth column. See how it's a medal total column? The IOC seems to accept that silver and bronze count.....

Look at the first column. Observe how the countries are numbered. Notice it is by total gold medals and then uses silver as tiebreakers and then bronze.

I don't get that mindset. You win in that you lost in that.

Just take pride in what you did win in.

That said America has more gold medals over the course of history idgaf if we don't score most every time

It's obtuse to think otherwise. They don't count as much as gold but they certainly count. At the country level, they measure overall competitive depth across the breadth of the the competitions. At the individual level, they acknowledge that persons skills at the highest level. The cutoff us arbitrary but finishing that high in anything is worth more than a pat on the back.

Just feels odd there is such a gap with US/China and rest of world. Is this due to Russia being banned? I barely know about other countries abilities. So Im not sure if specific events they dominate but since they got banned US/China got to win it instead.

Russia got banned because Putin decided to invade Ukraine. Though they weren't the only country, Belarus also got banned from this year's Olympics for being involved in the war.
Historically, though, US, Soviet Union and China tend to dominate the Summer Olympics, while Scandinavian countries tend to dominate the Winter Olympics.

You count by whichever makes your country look best.

But hey, tied for first at gold and by far the most at silver and overall. So USA wins.

It's basically that way in every sport, start when you're young, and train every day. Baseball, football, gymnastics, basketball, etc.
