Some people denigrate clip-on-ties as low class, yet they are far more convenient and safe.
Think about it, there are more safety features in a significant percentage pet collar designs/collars sold on the market than there are in a traditional necktie.

I had to wear one for the first time ever a few months ago for my sister's wedding.

it was ok after it was tied, but I had no idea how to tie it myself(because why would I?). so I needed 3 people's help to get it tied properly

the flower thing was far more annoying because it wouldn't stay pinned.

Agreed. Bolo are the superior ties. You can throw it at small game to capture them like pokemon

It takes like 5 -10 minutes tops to look up video tutorials and get the hang of it yourself after a few tries. It's not "lol why would I need to know how to do this", it's, you didn't even try to learn and practice how to do it yourself even for your sister's wedding. Shameful.

Double windsor is easy

I just use zipper ties

It does look nice with a vest.

But that's literally the only advantage amid a sea of disadvantages.

as someone who also had to wear one for a wedding recently it took about 30 minutes and didn't really look that great in the end even after all my effort

definitely not impossible but I probably shouldn't have waited until the last second

I wear a tie by choice, maybe 3 days a week or so.

It's 2024, you can wear your tie "loose" if you like and still look professional.

Plus, Ross's sells designer ties for 8 bucks. Ties are a great way to get a promotion.

Ties are easy, should not be uncomfortable, let you keep your collar unbuttoned, and let you be a bit lazy about ironing/steaming the front of your shirt.

Full Windsor all the way. That said, I dont like the symbolism of ties so Id rather we didnt have to wear them. But if you have to, clip-on is low class.

That 5-10 minutes of extra sleep definitely made all the difference.

I'm drawing a blank on situations where a tie could be a safety hazard and also be something you'd have any reason to wear in that situation

At least codpieces actually protected your junk. Ties are just a choking hazard that you can't get all of the damn stains out of.

Ties are a built-in weakness, but at the same time, there is a notable preference, in an office setting, if you just know how to wear your clothes right next to someone who doesn't.

But I'd rather just not wear them at all, for anything.

You could be chocked with a clip on too. We wore clip on ties in the prison and I tried explaining this but nobody cared. Just creates a extra step. The snatch it off now they got a strangulation device.

Practicality has never been a primary feature of fashion. Some women celebrities and models literally use an adhesive to wear their outfits. Shoes without traction and heels could cause you to die if a natural or manmade disaster happens where you are.

Neckties are the worst thing in human history and I say Croatia must be punished for it.

I almost skipped going up the steps to the stage at my graduation. Never understood the lack of traction on dress shoes.

I think its due to the sexism that was/is involved in womens clothing. From my understanding, men made their choice on what proper formal attire is a long time ago, and they made the choice for women many times throughout history and probably even in some of our individual lives.

Not as bad as bowties, which have a similar assembly, but instead of making you look classy, you look dorky.

It's not inconceivable. They could catch on stuff and tighten around your neck. You would hope they would be made to tear before they could strangle you, but I'm not really an authority on how that works.

Pretty sure the way I tied a tie just pulling on it didn't tighten it (not easily anyways). I always recalled having to pull while pushing up on the knot. But it has been over ten years

Worrying about strangling yourself with your tie is the definition of unreasonable

Having a couple of sport coats that can match your shirt is the best formal non-formal look you can get. A tie is just too much*.

If youre going somewhere that requires a tie, you need a full suit.

* ties were developed because buttons hadnt been invented and people needed something to tie there shirt closed.

You know, I might agree with the assessment that wearing a tie makes you feel good. I can't pin down whether it makes me feel like the fancy guy or the guy I'm charge, but there is a distinct "head turner" feel to being the guy in the tie.

BTW, awesome that you're choosing to teach something practical that so many people end up having to look up.

A proper gentleman wears a tie.
