Youd be surprised. I bought a house for my mother a few years ago. It was in Scottsdale Arizona.

I paid 5k down, and mortgage is only 800 bucks a month. My mom pays half, and if she ever gets remarried thatll be the other half.

Not all valuable jobs are worth their weight in compensation.

Sad but true but you could still have a lot of value by contribution.

I'm just saying, I make $0 at age 43. Plus, I'm not miserable. I enjoy not having to work for a living. And it's true that I don't know what my future holds. What's so wrong with that? I said "be glad you aren't me" and I really meant it.

I can never understand why people think what you earn or pay for shit is indicative of how well you live your life.

I'm in my 30s, but live comfortably. Yes I may have a few more quid than others, but that means fuck all.

If you are happy earning 50k living in rural Lincoln with a wife and a kid, then that sounds brilliant. Meanwhile if you're in fuckin Kensington on a 150k salary with a 1 bedroom flat @ 700k then, well, smile and nod.

I'm 36 and make slightly less than that. Such is life

But it is true that you could hit a "ceiling" of sorts without a higher/increasing income. That totally depends on what you want to do. Quiet town, less material desires, less traveling endeavors, by all means if the peace of mind and stability otherwise carry more weight, the more power to you.

I'm chasing/more heavily prioritizing the former. I'm going to gain more success by shedding expenses than trying to boost my income.

Scottsdale is a big place, its not just a bunch mansions on the hillside.

Like 40th street & Thomas is technically Scottsdale. That was the house I lived in college. I remember commuting 15 min to mill Ave on the weekend, and 20 min to GCU on the weekdays.

You've worded this far better than I could have done.

I'm at that stage of my life. I earn a reasonable amount, I've paid off my mortgage, got a few cars, and whilst I could chase a promotion and a larger salary, I'm thinking, what's the point? I've ticked my goals, I have a great work-life balance, and when I get to the end of the year and my 38th day of paid leave, I don't see a reason to change what's going on just to earn more. What's the fucking point if you can't enjoy it?

I'm 32 and at like 48k... Which hasn't been too bad for me... I also don't have any debt so that helps...

i was literally at some subreddit just awhile ago and some dude on there was talking how brutal it is to live at only 100k in cali, and everyone there were sympathizing and cant even imagine making less than100k lol. i live in cali too and make 50k and live pretty comfortable, i have a roomate though, and i also love my job.

While I think that's fantastic that you're able to live comfortably with 50k in Cali, this is typically not the norm. 50k is barely enough for Phoenix. Yeah maybe you can find am Apartment out here for 2k to 3k a month, or maybe you got a steal on a cracker box house that's straight out of fight club only 900 square fee that will need major repairs but like I said, this isn't the average market.

The dollar amount without knowing the cost of living area and living situation is pretty key.

My wife and I make just under 90k combined but we have a 2 story house and the only debt is the mortgage

If it makes you feel better, I make close to 3 times that and I feel pretty worthless as I have no social life whatsoever and have no idea how to go about one at this point given I cant drive and Im 38.

If it helps, in my grad school friend group I make the least amount of money. One friend used to make at least 180k and the other friend made more than that for like the last 10 years, and both of them are miserable because of life stuff and also not finding satisfaction in their jobs. Another makes 400k and while she's not depressed she also has a ton of complaints about her job.

So I won't say that income isn't that important because honestly I don't know how I would survive on 44k and live in a place that didn't constantly depress me, but income isn't everything

Machine learning manager and senior engineer at some company I forgot the name of. Similar job responsibilities to one of my labmates in grad school who is a machine learning project lead at Nvidia making around the same amount of money.

She was trying to recruit one of the depressed friends in our friend group and told him he could start at 200k but along with his depression he's a weirdo about power dynamics. Both of them are Indian so they have that weird thing going on like an unspoken competition. Also it was kinda odd how often caste stuff came up in grad school with me knowing a couple dozen Indian students but I never said anything about it and just watched.

I'm not the competitive type when it comes to money and only care about it up to the point where I can save monthly while still contributing to retirement, buy bs here and there, and also not have to sell a kidney if an emergency pops up. Assuming my performance review for the past year isn't ass and with the annual cost of living adjustment, I should crack 150k in January as a fed but if not I don't really care too much. I also only started making decent money when I turned 31 so while it may sound like a lot, I'm still playing catch up to people who had careers in their early 20s
