I think Pizza Tower entered mine. Something about the intense energy, the 90s Nicktoon and MS Paint comic art, and the way you can make a beautiful perfect run through a stage with the smooth controls really works for me.

i dont think there is anything modern besides this, on my list. And my list is mostly based on how the game personally made me feel, rather than technical or critical stuff.

Yeah this, I don't do rankings or lists or anything like that, I just have games I like and games I loved. But breath of the wild was so unbelievably fantastic and it was incredibly fortuitous to have played it during the pandemic. While everyone was whining about staying home I was spending hours on end just playing this game, one of the few games and first Zelda game I played without a guide thanks to how open the design was in solving puzzles.

There was a lot more production and experimentation back then, so both quantity and quality were higher for the respective times. Nowadays, we often wait half a decade for half a game or hot garbage

Disagree. Having played a ton of NES, SNES and Genesis games as they were released showed a lack of quality that happens less frequently now. Waiting forever though is certainly true, but there are enough developers today from all around the world that that doesn't matter.

I seriously believe that a lot of adults today simply have a harder time finding joy in things, and so they claim that games are worse, movies are worse, music is worse, etc.

minecraft, gta 5, valheim, space engineers, rdr 2 are all pretty high up there. Idk exactly what my top 5 would be, but these are definitely in a top 10-20. Minecraft is probably #1.

If we define modern as within the past ten years, then theres definitely some contenders. Hades immediately comes to mind for me.

Pizza Tower is really cool I agree TC - I dont think its in my GOAT top 5, but its absolutely a good time.

Cyberpunk 2077 (after patches) is probably the closest answer for me, but I don't think it's top 5.

If playing anything within the last 10 years counts, then Persona 4 Golden (first played it in 2015) or P5(R) easily.

I really love Mario + Rabbid Sparks of Hope. Gives Final Fantasy Tactics flashbacks. It'd be harder and better if mobility was restricted more and in Tactics you felt the affects of the terrain more, but switching from swords of tactics to guns or Mario + Rabbid is just fun.

Outer Wilds + Echoes of the Eye narrowly managed to become my favorite game after almost 2 decades of having Majora's Mask in a firm first.

Elden Ring also has to be high on the list, but I've mostly stopped keeping track because there's too many good games of similar quality that I love.

BG3 and Cyberpunk are both solidly in my top 5, and Elden Ring is top 10. Gaming has really been fantastic these past few years.
