If the Dems are teaming with Cheney, and trying to win over more republicans, the future elections might jump even more to the right. The Republican solution isn't gonna be to fix the GOP and fill the void left after Trump it'll be to take over the Democratic party completely and make it GOP vs Republicans. And I know people always say that the US Dems are barely liberal but it just feels like it's about to get much worse. It just feels like the perfect play. Give control over for a bit while the Dems continue to fail to make any substantial changes and then gradually build a following of noncrazy R's to turn the party.

Potentially, yes. That's always the risk with Allies of Convenience, so informed people need to strive to ensure that doesn't happen.

We can defend democracy with them while still disagreeing on taxes and abortion, after all.

That's what they've been trying since the 90s. Just a flood of crap Republican policy into the party as the original GOP grew more radical.

Unfortunately I don't think that matters. The Dems will constantly run on the "This time for sure" method of protecting abortion rights and they'll stay stuck where they are. Meaning it'll never have to be a pro life party since it's already been handed over to the states.

The goal is GOP minus the theocracy, xenophobia, and fascism.

I think the sane R's want out of the GOP and forming a new party would just be suicide. The Dems are basically only spending their terms fixing GOP created problems over and over so it's not super dangerous yet to let them gain more advantage.

No, they won't take over and replace the dems.

If anything the republicans will split off and separate into multiple parties that represent different factions.

They see the dems as the lesser evil now. Doesn't mean they want to become them.
