I ended up really disliking Super Mario Kart after revisiting it on the Wii U Virtual Console and wanting to beat it. It wasn't just the handling of the karts, it was the CPU itself. Of all the Mario Kart games I've played, I've never seen as much blatant cheating as I have here. Not just the arbitrarily exclusive attacks, it's that they flatout ignore the terrain, too.

They also have like perfect handling and shit. They never slide around when turning they take corners like Initial D.

Didn't like it back then. Don't like it now.
Liked 64 back then. Now, it still has charm, but plays like ass.

It's just as bad in 64

MK64 CPUs always pissed me off. Hitting them with a shell does not hamper them the way it does you.

Super Mario Kart was incredible as a kid growing up tbh

Grand Prix was fun by yourself or with someone, and battle mode was a ton of fun

Great memories

I started with Mario Kart 64.

Super Mario Kart is near-unplayable for me.

The only thing that really bugged me about SMK was how the CPU racers always finished in the same order every race. Even if you hit say the racer in 2nd and they fell back to 6th, they'd hurry back up to 2nd quickly. Only if you hit them within inches of the finish line on the last lap could you truly alter the outcome.

This was somewhat fixed in 64 (great game). I always loved using the lightning bolt just before a group of CPUs were about to leap over the big gap in Wario Stadium. A pity Double Dash did away with that type of thing. The game itself it good too, but you could no longer fall into a gap like that and fall behind. Lakitu would just pick you up and place you back.

On a somewhat related note, I'm really surprised they never made a sequel to Diddy Kong Racing, knowing how good that game was, and how different it was to Mario Kart 64.

@Ivany2008

Actually, there was a sequel in development, called Donkey Kong Racing. It was going to be released on the Gamecube and even had a trailer:

Of course, it got cancelled when Rare was sold to Microsoft.

Yeah, I was looking forward to that game back in the day. Was disappointed when it was canceled.
