Not yet.
I'm dreading when I have to cut contact with my sister, because I know she voted Trump. I won't be able to face her knowing she voted for him when my niece needs $10,000+/month in government assisted healthcare.

My niece is likely going to die because of Trump and I can't look at my sister or her husband knowing this.

So to anyone who voted yes, when trump looses do you plan to never speak to those family members ever again over a election?

Absolutely. Trump and his supporters directly oppose my very being. My cousin voting for trump is basically her saying that she doesn't care about us and the problems this will cause a lot of us. Her own brother is gay and he's cut her off because of this. I don't even want to speak to anyone who voted trump.

Not necessarily true. Ever since I started leaning liberal my mom kinda quit talking about politics.

If you don't bring up politicians and just talk about the issues themselves she is surprisingly liberal herself but she was indoctrinated as a kid unfortunately. So was I but somehow I managed to open my eyes on my own.

They voted for a racist pedophile rapist who actively wants to dismantle the country and legislate LGBTQ+ folks out of existence and set women and minorities back in terms of rights by 100 years.

Fuck those pieces of shit who voted for him.

Yeah I'm never cutting off my mother. I don't know who she voted for this time around since we don't really discuss politics anymore but she has always been there for me through thick and thin. And I just accept she was indoctrinated. She actually has a lot of liberal views but she was raised to believe the Dems where the bad guys.

Honestly kinda wish my grandad had been alive for Trump he was a die hard Republican but I have a hard time imagining him thinking trump had any form of intelligence. Hell my mom disliked trump till he won the primary in 2020. It's simply and unfortunately choosing a team and sticking by them mentality.

You were one of the lucky ones that didn't have your relatives become incredibly toxic, or decide to cut off contact themselves. Both have happened to people.

2. Is almost ashamed of her beliefs but can't seem to change (mom in law)
3. Is also not overly proud of his beliefs and when I've pressured him he understands my leftist beliefs and respects them (Dad)
4. Is just a loud mouthed, propaganda spewing physically and mentally ill buffoon so why bother, I don't even talk to him in general (father in law)
5. I'm sure there's others but they are literally irrelevant to me

if u wanna be clear, dont answer a question with another question. speak plainly, is the solution hating each other?
and to answer u, absolutely not, not be tolerant and friendly towards them, but wanting to exterminate them back wont do fuck all. fighting their toxic ideas step by step on the long term may be a better method than just hating the people themselves and leaving it at that

Yeah my cousin. I posted a topic on him a few weeks ago about how obnoxious he was being. He actually texted me today apologizing and said he hoped we can just agree to disagree about politics. I laughed but didnt respond. Its not even politics, he disagrees with human rights. Its pathetic.

I also already decided at Thanksgiving with my wifes family I will say hi and bye to her aunts and uncles and thats it. Unfortunately I cant do that with her parents because they help us too much.

I don't really have any family that are pro- Trumpers and if they are I probably haven't spoke to them in years anyway so I wouldn't know about it.

I have cut off some friends though, but I've been doing that gradually anyway as it had become clearer to me that some people I'd known for years were starting to drift away from attitudes that I can tolerate listening to. Like going on about things like "WoKE!!!! AGHHHH!" when a movie or whatever has the audacity to cast a black person or a woman lead character. Shit like that got insufferable, and the conversations that would arise would only become worse from those talking points.

Just can't stomach them anymore, to any level tolerance or patience. They do my fucking head in.

This is what most people in the country have experienced.

Dont be convicned that what you're seeing on CE is representative of the normal experience because its not. Most well reasoned people can still talk to their parents despite political disagreements, because political disagreements between different generations is a tale as old as time. This didnt start with Trump, won't end with Trump.

Id go as far as to say that most people who are willing to cut off family members like parents and siblings over strangers neither has ever met, already weren't that close with them. Its everyone's right to make that choice for themselves though.

Providing cover for heinous MAGAts and the like is that user's favorite form of entertainment.

Regarding the topic, it's not really an issue of normal people cutting off MAGAt relatives. It's a matter of MAGAt relatives forcing the issue by making it intolerable, and the normal person just recognizing that.

I don't know of any family members that are Trump supporters. But living in Oklahoma, I see Trump supporters everywhere.

Funny enough I saw a Facebook post of a magazine page that my late grandmother had and my relatives kept. It apparently had some not so flattering drawings and writings on a picture of Trump.

This magazine looks to be dated to either the 1980s or 1990s. I am certain my grandmother followed the stuff about the central park 5 or she was already on the up and up about Trump as she read quite a lot.

I didnt downplay anything.

The point of the post is that yes, disagreeing politically with parents is nothing new. And it's not new that it often involved critical social issues either. You dont think any anti war protesters in the Vietnam era had parents who were vets of the world wars and were all gung ho about it? Do you believe that all of them simply cut off their parents and siblings?

If your relationship with family is such that you can easily sever them over that, that is your choice. Historically though, that's not how things are for most.

Have you seen how a lot of Trump supporters act? They do not keep quiet about their hate for certain people (trans for example) existing, or for those that support them. That is not a simple disagreement that can just be overlooked, especially when they don't keep it to themselves.

I've functionally cut off contact with my mother. We might speak once a month for 10 minutes, but only about trivial topics like the weather. After this election, I might have to cut her off completely. She has stated, directly, that she doesn't believe in civil rights, doesn't believe in human rights, and that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. She has also said (these words are burned into my brain): "the opinion that 'Jewish people should be herded into death camps' is a perfectly fine opinion to have." This was her absolutely monstrous attempt to present herself as a free-speech absolutist. She considers Trump to be the greatest president in US history, of course.

Since I disagree with her on these issues, she's "ashamed to have me as a son." But she still expects me to come around for the holidays and smile and laugh like everything is normal. I haven't seen her in person in two years. I don't tell her anything about my life. If she knew who I was dating, and the GOP instates more bounty programs in the future, I'm worried she might report me or my partners to Trump's version of the Gestapo.

This is a perfect example of what I had in mind in post 143.

If you do end up cutting her off, it's just a painful recognition of the fact that she cut you off long ago.
