The people against it read a report that says that over some amount of fluoride is bad for you, but ignore that they'd have to drink hundreds of liters in a day to get to that level (and would die of water toxicity first).

Fluoride in drinking water is the most successful public health initiative in US history from what I've seen. There hasn't been any articles/studies attacking the practice that have been conclusive as far as I can tell. They seem to primarily just rely on "floride bad" while refusing to acknowledge that everything is poison in a high enough dose, and the dose in drinking water has yet to be linked to health issues.

This. Flouride is potentially dangerous in large doses, but we're talking just sucking toothpaste straight from the tube (I accidentally swallowed a glob while brushing the other day and I was fine). The amount in drinking water is too diluted to be dangerous. It's just classic Republican fear of things they don't understand.

You know how some people don't wear a seatbelt because of a handful of cases of people getting trapped and burning to death?

Imagine if it were scientifically proven that that is 100% impossible unless you were driving 3000 mph. Not only can you not go that fast, but if you crashed going that fast, you'd be waaaaay too dead to care if the seatbelt came undone. Like, your head would be in a different zip code.

This is what the fluoridated water paranoia is like.

Just this September a federal judge told the EPA to take regulatory action because of the many peer-reviewed studys that showed a negative impact on children's IQs.

Most of the fluoride in our water isn't naturally occurring and has a different molecular make-up. It shouldn't be called fluoride. It's actually a combination of hexafluorosilicic acid and sodium silicofluoride, classified as hazardous waste that must be handled with hazmat suits if spilled.

It is completely insane to put chemicals in drinking water that could impact kids brains for purpose of reducing cavities and should be stopped.

Do you know how to read?

The studies say HIGH levels of fluoride may be linked to lower IQ in developing brains. High meaning more than twice the recommended levels.

Some areas in the country have natural fluoride in drinking water and I can understand that being a concern if the water is not properly controlled. But then there are other variables even mentioned in studies such as poverty, which also correlates with lower IQ and, surprise, areas with poorly controlled water.

There is no conclusive evidence.

There are, however, countless studies showing improvement in child tooth decay rates in cities with fluoride in their water. This has been studied for decades and is well documented.

The report notes that the findings are limited to fluoride exposures that are more than double (1.5 mg/L) what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently recommends for the optimal level of community water fluoridation (0.7 mg/L).

You are not expected to respond, but you are called out.

Never had an issue myself, and I live in a hard water area. There's 0.124 mg/l of fluoride in my water supply, and given I normally get through a litre of tap water a day, I've never had any issues.

If I drank 50 litres per day then I'd probably have more important things to be concerned about, but generally, I don't think it's an issue.

It isn't toxic at that level. Toothpaste has more fluoride and you'd have to eat a dozen tubes of toothpaste to poison yourself.

The other people are worried about it "calcifiying your pineal gland" which is technically a real thing that actually doesn't really matter.

but why even have it there in the first place? 99% of the toothpaste sold have fluoride in it and you can easily buy some at walmart for a dollar.

Wouldn't it be better (and cheaper) creating programs that could bring more awarness to cavity preventing? Perhaps we can even create programs handing out toothpaste in poor neighborhoods. I can understand putting fluoride in 3rd world countries but not here.
