As someone whose quality of life has been denied by health insurance, I shed no tears for what just happened to that CEO

I was born with a narrowed aortic heart valve, which resulted in a condition called "aortic stenosis". Basically, the main output valve for my heart is considerably narrower than average. My heart must pump harder and faster at rest to adequately supply blood to my body. I can actually feel my heart pounding inside of my chest all of the time, as if I'd been running full sprint. When I exercise, insufficient oxygen supply means I find myself out of breath (and sometimes fainting) quite often. Any hope for athletics or a military career are essentially nonexistent.
This could be completely fixed, if I could afford surgery to have the valve replaced. Unfortunately, no health insurance company will cover this operation unless I can prove that the condition has deteriorated to the point that it is life-threatening. So because this completely-curable condition isn't immediately killing me, I must wait until I'm on death's doorstep before any insurance companies will (probably begrudgingly and with a million clauses and qualifiers) let me have my life back. That is how healthcare works in America.

So, a weird thing about claim denials is that many of them should actually be approved. The submission process for claims is often designed to confuse people and cause errors. The hospital staff submitting them is generally not sufficiently trained and the doctor is often not appropriately informed of the insurance problem.

Its overall designed to make you appeal an initial decision if after running the numbers to see if it's more profitable for them that way because doctors will essentially give up on appeals. The worse part is that they will adjust that by changing the submission questions that need to be answered for the claims to be more or less confusing.

On top of that, it's often not a well trained member of the staff of the hospital submitting these claims or one denying/approving them on the other end. So the human error aspects are massive. When a denial is received, it's typically not relayed properly to the doctor where they may want to pivot to a treatment that is more easily covered or essentially the same. It's generally just half ass appealed without any real regard for addressing the denial reasons. This results in a giant lag of the insurance provider giving a second denial. Then you're generally doing a second appeal which is another huge lag. So, there is plenty of room for screw ups and it just kind of sits in limbo for long periods of time while you as a patient get no treatment.

I started working in the industry at a major hospital dealing with this like a year ago and they thought it was a revolutionary idea to read the reason these claims are being denied and summarize it for the doctor. Shit is insane.

So with the CEO dead does that mean this will change? Or is he like a cog in the system. He gets replaced by a new boss that same as the old boss. And there are other companies that does what UNC does except their CEOs didnt get killed.

Americans publicly revel in this guy's death because reasons but they wouldn't help do the work to get a public option passed, won't vote, or vote for Republicans.

Yeah lobbying and the GOP are corrupt and block a lot, but universal health care will never happen because American are too lazy to fight for it and believe any BS corporate propaganda about "your good insurance will go away."
