It was as much a part of the definitive list of Important Titles for the console as the Mario and Mega Man games. Everyone at school knew of it, played it, and lied about finishing it. I think this is probably because it was one of the four or five games that was with the NES that was set out in the local toyshop for people to play, so we all had access, haha - I think probably half my class got it for Christmas that year. But while it's not obscure compared to a lot of the games in this topic, I'm pretty sure that it's literally only in the little town I grew up in where the game is considered a big deal.
