the farthest I traveled to internationally is Philippines but it still wasnt a luxury vacation. I couldnt even dream of affording those expensive hotels on my salary in:

Cebu, Palawan, Boracay, or Manila unless I was filthy rich (which isnt a majority of people, lets be honest)

yet people I know are taking luxury vacations to Japan, Bali, Hawaii, or Brazil and spending thousands on it? How the hell do people afford this?

Sometimes you can find deals, even on luxury hotels. Flights, you absolutely can, especially if you are prepared to change planes 2 or 3 times.

Sometimes people have more money than you think.

Sometimes people really prioritise travel and cut back elsewhere.

And, yes, sometimes people put it all on credit cards and worry about the cost later.

I can see reason 1 or 3 being realistic

but 2 is pretty hard to pull off. We budgeted our money based on our finances and no matter what we cut. we still cant make it to those fancy vacations without credit carding the thing

So what? I have been plenty of exotic places (often my dad paid) but planning vacations like that regularly is still extremely tough.

Philippines is not hard to afford if youre just visiting family and youre not doing any of the fancy tourist stuff and staying in the fancy hotels

Doing both of what I mentioned would cost you a lot of money

I mean some churn credit cards for miles & hotel points. But you have to spend a fair amount to hit the targets on the sign up bonuses.

Others have jobs that require travel. Especially good if the company lets you charge to a personal card & then reimburses you. My husband got a job like that now. Its $25-$35k in charges a year that we get credit card points on plus the miles & hotel points.

There is obviously a ton of variations on where you go, how long, how many people are going and so on. With that being said I know a lot of people who do a once a year trip for under 10K as a couple. I hate to sound privileged but by no means do I think you need to be rich to be able to afford 5k to 10K a year for a nice vacation which seems roughly about what these people are spending. Id say on average most of them are hitting about 5K to 8K on some pretty nice trips. Some are doing more budget friendly options.

I see people at my job that make less than I do and have more bills than I do be able to do it and its not because they are going into debt for it. Some of the younger guys just recently took trips overseas and one said he spent like $3,500. Definitely dont need to be rich to afford that.

It's more a matter of being able to take a week or more off without coming back to a massive backlog or your coworkers becoming overwhelmed by your absence.

You either have shit coworkers, or you haven't put proper backups in place.

I had my 2 week honeymoon in May, and so I had to do a LOT of planning on how everything would be covered. Admittedly a pain, but it all worked out.

I have (adult) kids and we've taken a big vacation each of the last three years.

Having good jobs is the first thing (easier said than done, yes, but some of us DO have good paying jobs)

Then it's a matter of priorities. We would rather do a nice big vacation once a year than, say, go out to eat 3 or 4 nights a week. We are really frugal with a lot of our day to day life so that we can afford the vacation.

I will add that having money/assets opens up options for cheaper debt.

Two years ago, we spent 17 days in Europe (my wife, myself, and two kids).

We paid for most of it with a Southwest Airlines card (to earn miles), then paid off that card with a Home Equity Line of Credit (which has a much lower interest rate). We then paid off the HELOC over the next 4-6 months

Is it unfair that having more money makes borrowing money cheaper? Yes, but that's how a lot of people afford things that others cannot

A good job, mostly. I make six figures and that pays for nice vacations if you save for them.

Also, I can only speak for Japan, but it's honestly not that expensive of a trip if you want to do it on a budget. You can get airfare from North America for <$1000 if you don't mind waiting for special deals; you can get nightly accommodations for <$50 a night (capsule hotels, hostels, etc.), the trains are cheap and will take you wherever you want to go (and if you want to see a big chunk of the country, the regional JR Rail passes are still good value, even though the country-wide one is now no longer worth it; a couple hundred bucks gets you a week's access to 90+% of the trains, including the shinkansen, in one of Japan's regions), and food is not particularly expensive.

I usually splurge on my trips to Japan, but if you forced me to do it on a budget, I could probably plan a pretty good two-week trip for ~$3000 per person.

This. We rarely go out to eat. Mostly because with my kids allergies its much easier to just make food at home. We also live in a home that is like 4x less expensive than what we could afford on my husbands salary.

I like to travel and now that the kids re teens and its easier to travel with them, well be doing international trips. Went to London last summer and are going to Japan for 3 weeks this June (I dont work & my husband has no set amount of vacation time). But we are totally splurging on that trip.

Last year I did a solo trip to Japan for 18 days. When all was said and done, I added up all my expenses and my grand total was around 5k, with plane and hotels taking more than half of that. It helps a lot that I went by myself since I didn't have to pay for everything 2+ times over. But 5k is a reasonable amount of money for most people.

I mean totally depends on what you do. Im looking to do 1 night in ryokan and have a kaiseki meal and dang is that expensive. Especially since the pricing isnt per room but per person.

Then my husband really wants to have Kobe steak in Kobe and that one meal will be $400-500 for the 4 of us.

You can certainly spend a lot wherever you go, but at that point, I feel like thats not the cost of travelling. Its something else.

If Im doing long haul flights I go first class. However, I dont feel like I can then moan about the cost of the plane ticket.

Yea when you start adding kids/family, prices go up a lot. But I was on the move everyday of the 18 days, I was constantly on a train and walking to attractions and restaurants, so I wasn't being frugal with money. It also helps that I don't drink, so I wasn't spending hundreds at bars every night.

I also did Kobe beef in Kobe (highly recommend the Kobe herb garden while your there). I went to one of the most highly rated places, but after sitting down and looking at the prices....I grabbed one of the cheapest options, the second to cheapest cut with the smallest portion, cost me around $60.

Sometimes I wonder... I've only ever wanted 2 travel destinations. 70,000 tons of metal (Cruise ship that only plays metal music) which is beyond what I can afford at 4 grand, and a trip to Japan. Which I would have had booked for next year had I not lost my job. The worst part is that plane tickets are so ridiculously overpriced thanks to our terrible air service in my province.
